Pandharpurतीर्थSolapur

The Vitthal-Rukmini temple on the Chandrabhaga, and the destination of the wari. Vitthal stands with hands on hips on a brick — the posture is the iconography — and pilgrims take darshan by touching the feet, in a queue that on Ashadhi Ekadashi runs for many hours. Chokhamela's samadhi stands at the foot of the temple steps, outside the main structure.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Ashadhi Ekadashi (June–July) for the scale; any other month for the town..

Alandiतीर्थPune

Dnyaneshwar's samadhi on the Indrayani, where he is recorded as having entered sanjeevan samadhi in 1296 at around twenty-one. His palkhi leaves from here for Pandharpur each Ashadh, and the town's economy is built around the pilgrim year.

Dehuतीर्थPune

Tukaram's village on the Indrayani, with the stone on which he is said to have sat and the shila temple marking his disappearance in 1650. The second palkhi starts here.

Shaniwar WadaविरासतPune

The Peshwa seat, begun by Bajirao I in 1730 and occupied from 1732 until the fort's interior burned in 1828, leaving the fortification walls, the Delhi Darwaza with its elephant-proof spikes, and the foundations of the palace inside. What survives is the plan of a bureaucracy rather than the look of a palace.

SinhagadविरासतPune

The fort formerly called Kondhana, on a mesa above Pune, taken in the night action of 1670 in which Tanaji Malusare was killed. It is now also Pune's weekend walk, with pithla-bhakri and curd stalls at the top.

कैसे पहुँचें: About 30 km from Pune; road to the base, then a steep 3 km climb or a shared jeep.

ShivneriविरासतPune

A hill fort above Junnar where Shivaji was born in 1630, with seven successive gateways, rock-cut water cisterns and the Shivai temple the name is drawn from. Junnar below it has one of the largest concentrations of rock-cut Buddhist caves in India.

Rajgad and TornaविरासतPune

Torna is recorded as the first fort taken in 1646; Rajgad, on the ridge opposite, served as the capital for roughly a quarter of a century before the seat moved to Raigad in the Konkan. Rajgad's Balekilla, Padmavati machi and Suvela machi make it the most complete surviving example of Maratha fort planning.

PratapgadविरासतSatara

Built in 1656 above the Koyna valley and the site of the 1659 meeting with Afzal Khan. Its position — a fort in dense forest at the head of a pass — is the argument for why it was built where it was.

PurandarविरासतPune

A double fort, Purandar and Vajragad, where the treaty of 1665 with Mirza Raje Jai Singh was concluded and where Sambhaji was born. Now partly a military area, with restricted access to sections of the upper fort.

PanhalaविरासतKolhapur

The largest fort in the Deccan by circuit, with enormous granaries (the Ambarkhana) built for a long siege, and the starting point of the 1660 night escape to Vishalgad. It is inhabited — a town sits inside the walls.

Bhimashankarतीर्थPune

A jyotirlinga in the crest forest at the source of the Bhima, inside a wildlife sanctuary that protects the Indian giant squirrel, Maharashtra's state animal. Temple and forest are the same site — the sanctuary exists partly because the temple's sacred grove was never cleared.

सबसे अच्छा समय: August–February.

Jejuriतीर्थPune

The hill shrine of Khandoba, reached by a long stepped ascent, where devotees throw turmeric powder by the handful until the whole hill is yellow — hence Sonyachi Jejuri, golden Jejuri. Khandoba is worshipped across caste lines and particularly by Dhangar shepherds; his consorts Mhalsa and Banai are drawn from different communities, and the shrine's mythology is explicit about it.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Somvati Amavasya, and Champa Shashthi in Margashirsha..

Mahabaleshwar and Panchganiपहाड़Satara

Laterite-capped plateau tops at around 1,300 m at the head of the Krishna, developed as the Bombay Presidency's hot-weather station in the 1820s. The same altitude and soil that made it a hill station make it India's principal strawberry ground.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–February.

Kaas Plateauप्रकृतियूनेस्कोSatara

A laterite plateau top with almost no soil, which floods in the monsoon and then flowers in successive waves of species for about three weeks after it. It is part of the Sahyadri sub-cluster of the Western Ghats World Heritage Site inscribed in 2012, and daily visitor numbers are capped by permit because footfall destroys the thing people come for.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Early to late September, with a permit booked in advance..

Kolhapur — Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) templeतीर्थKolhapur

A stone temple of Chalukyan origin, counted in the Shakta tradition as one of the principal Shakti Peethas and known locally as Ambabai rather than by the Sanskrit name. For a few days in late January and again in early November the setting sun aligns with the sanctum doorway and strikes the image — the Kiranotsav — and the town times its calendar to it.

Sangli and MirajशहरीSangli

Sangli's market yard is one of India's principal turmeric markets, with underground curing pits that let it hold stock across seasons; Miraj next door makes tanpuras and sitars and taught the Kirana gharana. Modern Marathi theatre is dated to a performance staged at Sangli in 1843.

WaiविरासतSatara

A Krishna-bank town of seven ghats and Peshwa-period temples, including the Dholya Ganpati, laid out so the river frontage is public architecture. It has been used as a shooting location so often that Marathi and Hindi cinema audiences recognise it without knowing its name.

Bhigwan and the Ujani backwaterवन्यजीवPune

The shallow tail of the Ujani reservoir on the Bhima, where lesser flamingos winter in the thousands along with painted storks and glossy ibis. It is an accidental habitat — an irrigation dam built in the 1970s that produced exactly the shallow saline mudflat flamingos feed on.

सबसे अच्छा समय: December–March, at dawn, by local boat..

NaneghatविरासतPune

A rock-cut pass through the crest carrying a Satavahana-era trade route from the Konkan ports up to Junnar, with a cave bearing a long inscription of Queen Naganika and a rock-cut stone jar in which tolls were dropped — nane means coin, and the pass is named for the toll. One of the oldest surviving pieces of transport infrastructure in the Deccan.

Karla and Bhaja cavesविरासतPune

Rock-cut Buddhist chaitya halls of the second century BCE to second century CE cut beside the same Konkan-to-plateau trade routes, with Karla's chaitya carrying the largest surviving wooden roof ribs of any Indian cave. Their donors' inscriptions name merchants and guilds, not kings.

Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuaryवन्यजीवयूनेस्कोKolhapur

Evergreen ghat forest holding one of the largest surviving Indian bison (gaur) populations, and part of the Western Ghats World Heritage Site. The sanctuary sits on top of a bauxite-bearing plateau, which is why its boundaries have been repeatedly contested.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–February.
