Vitthal and the Wari Corridor
The Vitthal cult and its walking pilgrimage. The deity at Pandharpur has an old Kannada following as well as a Marathi one, the Haridasa tradition of Karnataka addresses the same Vitthala, and the Vitthala temple at Hampi carries the name into Vijayanagara's architecture.
Maharashtra's Varkari tradition made the walk itself the practice and the abhanga its literature; Karnataka's Haridasas made the devaranama a musical form that entered Carnatic concert repertoire. Same deity, one tradition organised around a road and the other around a composition.
The Jowar Bread Belt
Hand-patted sorghum bread with a pounded raw-chilli relish and a gram-flour dish beside it — bhakri, thecha and pithla here; jolada rotti, kharda and yennegai across the Krishna; roti with pachadi further east. The same three-part plate follows the black-soil dryland rather than any language boundary.
North Karnataka pats a thinner, drier rotti and pairs it with brinjal in a peanut-and-sesame gravy; Marathwada sweetens the masala; Desh keeps the relish raw and the pulse sprouted.
Kolhapuri Chappal Corridor
Vegetable-tanned, hand-braided leather footwear made by Chamar and Dhor households across Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Solapur and across Belagavi, Dharwad, Bagalkot and Vijayapura, under a single geographical indication held jointly by both states.
The Karnataka side tends towards heavier soles and the Kapshi and Bakkalnali patterns; the Maharashtra side towards the lighter Kachkadi and Pukri types. Buyers treat them as one product; makers do not.
The Ghat Crossing
A two-way trade over the Amba, Phonda, Kumbharli, Varandha and Bhor passes — jaggery, jowar, groundnut and onion going down to the Konkan; kokum, salt, dried fish, cashew and Alphonso coming up. The pass villages keep both kitchens, and Kolhapur's cooking is measurably more coconut-heavy than Pune's for this reason alone.
Below the crest the souring agent is kokum and the fat is coconut; above it, tamarind and groundnut oil. The changeover happens within about thirty kilometres of road.
Kirana Gharana and the Instrument Trade
A vocal school named for Kairana in the upper Doab that was developed in the Deccan — at Miraj under Sangli patronage, and at Dharwad, Belagavi and Hubballi — together with the Miraj workshops that supply the tanpuras and sitars the school is sung on.
The Dharwad line produced a Kannada-speaking concert tradition and the Marathi line a stage-and-natya connection through the sangeet natak; the instrument makers served both without moving.
The Maratha Administrative Diaspora
Marathi-speaking administrative households, the Modi cursive script used for revenue records, and temple and ghat patronage, carried out of this plateau in the eighteenth century — the Scindias to Gwalior, the Holkars to Indore and Maheshwar, the Gaekwads to Baroda, and a separate seventeenth-century Bhonsle line to Thanjavur, which built a Marathi manuscript library in the Tamil delta.
The Thanjavur court produced Marathi literature and Carnatic music patronage in the same building; the Malwa and Gwalior houses left Maharashtrian temple architecture and ghats on the Narmada and the Ganga while their language was absorbed. Ahilyabai Holkar's building programme from Maheshwar reached Kashi, Somnath and Gaya.
