नृत्य

Lavaniलोक

A fast dholki-driven song-and-dance form in nauvari, built on suggestive verse and precise footwork under a heavy drape. Two live traditions survive — the seated, vocally exacting Baithakichi Lavani or Sangeet Bari, and the standing Dholki Fad Lavani of the tamasha stage. The performing communities have carried the form for generations while being socially penalised for it, and that history is part of the form's record.

कौन करता है: Women performers, historically from the Kolhati, Mahar and Matang communities, in hereditary troupes. मौका: Tamasha performance, fairs, the jatra season

Dhangari Gajaलोक

Men in dhoti and pheta dance in a ring around drummers, arms overhead, to songs addressed to Khandoba and to Banai, the Dhangar wife of the deity. It is danced at the end of the transhumance year, when flocks come back off the dry grazing.

कौन करता है: Dhangar shepherd communities. मौका: The Khandoba calendar, especially at Jejuri

Gondhalअनुष्ठान

An overnight invocation performed in a lamp-lit square with sambal drum and tuntune, mixing genealogy, myth and direct address to the family that commissioned it. It is contracted for a specific household event, not staged.

कौन करता है: Gondhali performers. मौका: Weddings, house consecrations, vows to Renuka or Bhavani

Mangalagaurलोक

A night of sung games — jhimma, phugadi, bhui-chakri — performed by women in a house, with no male audience and no stage. Physically demanding and competitive, and one of very few Indian folk forms with no performer-spectator division at all.

कौन करता है: Women, in the first years of marriage. मौका: Shravan Tuesdays

Vasudevअनुष्ठान

A single itinerant singer in a conical cap of peacock feathers who arrives at first light, sings, spins once and leaves without being asked in. A door-to-door devotional form that survives mainly around Pune and Satara.

कौन करता है: Hereditary Vasudev singers. मौका: Dawn, through the year

संगीत

Abhanga and Varkari kirtan

The abhanga is a short unrhymed Marathi devotional verse in a fixed metre, composed by the sants and sung collectively to taal cymbals, mridang and ektari veena. Varkari kirtan is its performance form — a lead singer expounds one abhanga for an hour while the dindi answers. Because the texts are in ordinary Marathi and are sung rather than read, the tradition transmitted a scriptural literature to an unlettered countryside.

Povada

A ballad of heroic narrative, sung fast and declaimed rather than crooned, with a daf drum. Agnidas's povada on the killing of Afzal Khan is dated to the seventeenth century, which makes the form a near contemporary record of the events it describes.

Bharud

Allegorical devotional song with a double meaning — a comic or domestic surface over a spiritual argument. The form is associated with Eknath of Paithan in Marathwada and is performed throughout this region.

Kirana gharana at Miraj

Abdul Karim Khan settled at Miraj in Sangli district and taught there, and the town became one of the gharana's working centres alongside Dharwad and Belagavi. Miraj also makes the instruments — its sitar-and-tanpura workshops supply Hindustani musicians across India.

रंगमंच

Marathi Sangeet Natak

Modern Marathi theatre is conventionally dated to Vishnudas Bhave's Sita Swayamvar, staged at Sangli in 1843 under the patronage of the Sangli court. The musical play that followed made singing actors — most famously Bal Gandharva — into public figures, and built the audience that Marathi theatre still has.

Tamasha

A travelling variety form combining gan (invocation), gaulan, lavani and a closing vag narrative play, carried by phad troupes through the fair season. It has been performed largely by Kolhati, Mahar and Matang families, and the Maharashtra government's tamasha subsidy is one of the few state supports any Indian folk theatre receives.

शिल्प

Kolhapuri Chappal जीआई पंजीकृत Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Solapur, jointly with four districts of north Karnataka

Registered as a geographical indication in 2018–19, held jointly across Maharashtra and Karnataka — a GI whose defined area deliberately crosses a state line because the craft cluster does. The work is done overwhelmingly by Chamar and Dhor artisan households, and the traditional tanning is the part of the process now hardest to sustain.

सामग्री: Vegetable-tanned buffalo and cow hide. तकनीक: Hides are tanned with babul bark rather than chrome, cut and braided by hand, and assembled with leather thong and no nails or synthetic thread. The sole is built up in layers and shaped to the wearer's foot with use rather than sized to it.

Kolhapur Jaggery जीआई पंजीकृत Kolhapur

Registered as a geographical indication in 2013–14. Kolhapur's gul is graded and auctioned at its own market yard and is sold as far as Gujarat and Rajasthan.

सामग्री: Sugarcane juice. तकनीक: Juice is clarified with bhendi (okra) mucilage and boiled in open pans to a pale golden set, then poured into moulds. The pale colour comes from clarification, not from sulphur.

Miraj musical instruments जीआई योग्य Sangli (Miraj)

A cluster of a few dozen families, mostly of the Sitarmaker lineage, that has supplied Hindustani classical musicians for over a century. The supply chain is unusually local — the gourd, the wood and the ear are all within one district.

सामग्री: Kalyani pumpkin gourd, teak and tun wood, gut and steel. तकनीक: Gourds are grown to shape near Pandharpur, dried, cut and joined to a carved wooden neck; the fitting of the jawari bridge, which produces the tanpura's overtone buzz, is done by ear.

Sangli turmeric जीआई पंजीकृत Sangli

Registered as a geographical indication in 2018–19. Sangli's market yard has been one of India's principal turmeric trading centres since the nineteenth century; much of what it trades is now grown elsewhere and cured and sold here.

सामग्री: Cured turmeric rhizome. तकनीक: Rhizomes are boiled, sun-dried for days and polished, then stored in underground pits lined and sealed against moisture — a practice that let Sangli hold stock across seasons and become a price-setting market.

Kolhapuri Saaj silverwork जीआई योग्य Kolhapur

The region's signature ornament, made in the lanes around Kolhapur's Gujari bazaar. Each pendant is a named creature or object, and a full saaj is a set rather than a design.

सामग्री: Gold, silver, coral. तकनीक: Repoussé and casting of twenty-one named pendant motifs strung on a single chain.

Mahabaleshwar strawberry जीआई पंजीकृत Satara (Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani)

Registered as a geographical indication in 2010–11. The plateau supplies the great majority of India's strawberries, from an area small enough to drive across in an hour.

सामग्री: Strawberry. तकनीक: Grown on the laterite plateau top at around 1,300 m, cropped from November through May.

Purandar fig and Waghya ghevada जीआई पंजीकृत Pune (Purandar), Satara

Both registered in 2015–17 — the Purandar fig from the fort's dry slopes, and Waghya ghevada, a dark-mottled bean of the Satara uplands. They are examples of a GI protecting a dryland crop rather than a luxury one.

सामग्री: Fig, kidney bean. तकनीक: Rain-fed cultivation on shallow basalt soils.

Ajara Ghansal rice and Mangalwedha jowar जीआई पंजीकृत Kolhapur (Ajara); Solapur (Mangalvedha)

Ajara Ghansal is a short-grained aromatic rice grown only in the ghat-foot pocket where rainfall allows paddy at all. Mangalwedha jowar is a large-grained rabi sorghum from the dryland east — the region's bread grain, GI-protected, from the taluka where Chokhamela lived.

सामग्री: Rice, sorghum. तकनीक: Rain-fed landrace cultivation, both registered in 2015–16.
