Amber is part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage listing; the walled city of Jaipur, laid out on a nine-square grid in 1727, was inscribed separately as a World Heritage city in 2019.

Sawai Jai Singh II's masonry observatory, completed around 1734, whose Vrihat Samrat Yantra sundial is accurate to about two seconds. Instruments, not decoration.
A fort on a 120 m escarpment above the blue town, never taken by direct assault — the gates still carry Jaipur cannonball scars from 1808 — with one of the best-run museums in India inside it.
Getting there: Jodhpur airport (JDH) and Jodhpur Junction (JU) are both in the city.
One of very few forts anywhere still inhabited — around a quarter of the old town's population lives inside the walls, which is also the source of its drainage and conservation crisis.

The Mewar capital moved here after Chittorgarh fell — a city built around linked artificial lakes, with the City Palace running along the eastern shore.
A lake town with one of very few temples to Brahma anywhere, and a livestock fair each Kartik that draws tens of thousands of camels, horses and cattle.

The shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, visited by Hindus and Muslims alike; the annual Urs is one of the largest gatherings in the region.
A stepwell of about 3,500 narrow steps descending thirteen storeys in a precise inverted geometry, built in the 8th–9th century to reach water and stay cool.
Jain temples of the 11th–13th centuries whose marble carving is worked so thin it is translucent. Plain on the outside by design.
