Harshavardhan	590–647	Ruler	Made Kannauj the capital of northern India and hosted the assemblies that Xuanzang described — the source of most of what is known about seventh-century India.
Abdul Karim Khan	1872–1937	Musician	From Kairana in the Upper Doab; founded the Kirana gharana of khayal singing, whose lineage runs to Sawai Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi and Gangubai Hangal.
Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi	1890–1931	Journalist	Editor of Pratap at Kanpur, a central figure in Hindi journalism, and killed while trying to stop communal rioting in the city.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan	1907–2003	Poet	Wrote Madhushala at Allahabad in 1935 — the best-known single work of the Chhayavad-era Hindi poetry that the city's literary circle produced.
