Ujjayanta PalaceHeritageWest Tripura (Agartala)
Built for Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya between 1899 and 1901 in an Indo-Saracenic manner, with three domes, the tallest at 86 feet, set in a compound of about 250 acres in the middle of Agartala. Rabindranath Tagore gave it its name. It housed the state legislature from 1973 to 2011 and reopened as the state museum in 2013, with more than a thousand objects covering the whole region.
Best time: October–March.
NeermahalHeritageSepahijala (Melaghar)
A palace standing in the water of Rudrasagar lake, begun in 1921 for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya and finished around 1930 — twenty-four rooms of marble and sandstone in a mixed Hindu and Mughal idiom, reached only by boat. It is the largest water palace in India, and the annual water festival in August fills the lake around it with racing boats.
Best time: October–March. Getting there: About 53 km from Agartala by road to Melaghar, then by boat across Rudrasagar.
UnakotiHeritageUnakoti (near Kailashahar)
A hillside of colossal Shaiva relief sculpture cut directly into the rock, dating mainly to the eighth and ninth centuries — a thirty-foot Shiva head known as Unakotiswara Kal Bhairav, a twenty-two-foot seated Ganesha, and Uma-Maheshwara panels across roughly 150 acres of forested slope with streams running through it. The name means one less than a crore. India added it to the UNESCO tentative list in 2022; it is not an inscribed World Heritage Site.
Best time: October–April. Getting there: About 8 km from Kailashahar; roughly 180 km by road from Agartala, or by rail to Kumarghat.
Tripura Sundari Temple (Matabari)PilgrimageGomati (Udaipur)
Built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 on a low hillock in the shape of a tortoise, which is why it is also called the Kurma Pitha, and counted among the fifty-one Shakta peethas. The Kalyan Sagar tank behind it holds large soft-shell turtles and fish that are fed rather than caught. The Diwali mela here is the largest single gathering in the region's calendar.
Best time: October–March; Diwali for the mela.
ChabimuraHeritageGomati (Amarpur)
A cliff face on the Gomati at the Devtamura ridge, carved with images of Shiva, Vishnu, Kartikeya and a Mahishasuramardini Durga about twenty feet high, dated to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The site is approached by boat up the river, and the carvings are read from the water because there is no bank to stand on.
Best time: November–March. Getting there: About 82 km from Agartala to Amarpur, then by country boat up the Gomati.
PilakHeritageSouth Tripura (Jolaibari)
An archaeological area of Buddhist and Hindu stone and terracotta sculpture of roughly the eighth to twelfth centuries, scattered across fields and mounds rather than concentrated in one monument. It is the clearest physical evidence that this territory sat on a route between the Bengal delta and the Arakan coast long before any of its surviving dynastic architecture was built.
Jampui HillsHillNorth Tripura
The highest ground in the region, topped by Betlingchhip at 939 m, with Mizo-speaking villages along the crest and mandarin orange terraces on the slopes. It is the only part of the region cold enough in winter for citrus of this kind, and the November orange festival at Vanghmun is built on that single climatic fact.
Best time: October–December.
Sepahijala Wildlife SanctuaryWildlifeSepahijala
Mixed moist deciduous forest with a lake, a botanical garden and a zoo, about 25 km from Agartala. It is the accessible place to see Phayre's langur, the spectacled monkey that is the state's emblematic primate, along with capped langur and a heavy resident bird list.
Best time: November–March.
Trishna Wildlife SanctuaryWildlifeSouth Tripura
The region's stronghold for gaur, in secondary forest and grassland in the south. Lower-profile than Sepahijala and considerably harder to reach, which is much of the reason the herds are still there.
Best time: November–March.
Dumboor LakeNatureDhalai (Gandacherra)
A reservoir on the Gomati scattered with islands, formed by the dam at Dumboor and now a fishery and a migratory bird site. The river leaves it through the gorge that eventually cuts past the Chabimura carvings.
Best time: November–March.
Chaturdash Devta TemplePilgrimageWest Tripura (Old Agartala)
The temple of the fourteen dynastic deities, whose annual Kharchi puja in July draws a week-long fair. The images are attended by hereditary chantai priests who carry them to the Haora river to be bathed — a rite conducted by indigenous priests for a dynasty that otherwise patronised Brahminical worship, and the single clearest surviving instance of the region's two religious systems operating as one.
Bhuvaneswari TempleHeritageGomati (Udaipur)
A small riverside temple on the Gomati at Udaipur, of the seventeenth century, known far beyond its size because Rabindranath Tagore set both the novel Rajarshi and the play Visarjan around it.
Kamalasagar Kali TemplePilgrimageSepahijala
A fifteenth-century Kali shrine above a large tank excavated in the Manikya period, on the western edge of the plain. The image is a stone Mahishasuramardini panel of an earlier date, reused as the temple's presiding form.
AgartalaUrbanWest Tripura
A planned nineteenth- and twentieth-century town on flat ground, laid out around the palace compound, with Battala and Maharajganj as its working markets and a food scene in which mui borok counters and Bengali sweet shops sit on the same street. It is the second-largest city in the North East.
