Cross-border corridors
Traditions that continue past an administrative line. Written once at the corridor level and referenced from every region it crosses, never duplicated.
Shencottah Gap Corridor
Malayalam speech, Travancore land-tenure vocabulary and the Punalur–Shencottah railway through the one low pass in the southern Ghats. The Shencottah tract was Travancore territory and has been administered from Madras since 1956, and its Malayalam-speaking population, place names and temple calendar did not move.
How it diverges: On the western side Malayalam is the language of school and administration; on the eastern side the same households now educate in Tamil, so the speech is being maintained at home rather than in print.
Sabarimala Pilgrim Corridor
The 41-day vratham, the black mundu, the irumudikettu and the sharanam chant, carried by organised neighbourhood groups from across south India who travel together and stage at Erumeli or Pamba.
How it diverges: In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka the preparatory observance is organised through local Ayyappa bhajana mandalis and conducted in the local language, while in Kerala it is arranged household by household. The vow is the same; the institution that supports it is not.
Kudampuli Sour Line
Smoke-dried Garcinia rind as the souring agent for fish, and the unglazed clay pot it has to be cooked in. The practice runs the length of the Malayalam coast and continues south past the tip into the Kanyakumari kitchens.
How it diverges: East of the Ghats the same fish curry is soured with tamarind and cooked in metal, and gets a much heavier ground-masala base. Kudampuli's range stops almost exactly where coconut oil stops being the default fat.
Travancore Court Carnatic Corridor
Compositions, musicians and instruments. Swathi Thirunal's court drew Vadivelu of the Thanjavur quartet and a stream of Tamil-country musicians; his compositions went back the other way and are now standard concert repertoire in Chennai.
How it diverges: In Tamil Nadu the compositions are performed as mainstream Carnatic kritis; in Kerala they are often sung with sopana inflection and to the edakka, which changes the ornamentation considerably.
Marumakkathayam Corridor
Matrilineal descent and joint-family property held in the female line, practised by several communities across this coast, in the far south and, as Aliya Santana, in Tulu Nadu.
How it diverges: The system was dismantled by different legislatures at different dates through the twentieth century, so the vocabulary of tharavadu and karanavar survives in property disputes and in fiction long after the law that produced it stopped operating.
Cashew Shelling CorridorInternational
The raw cashew trade and the hand-shelling workforce. Nuts imported through Kollam and Mangaluru from Tanzania, Benin and Côte d'Ivoire are shelled, peeled and graded on this coast and re-exported.
How it diverges: Kerala's industry is unionised, female and factory-based with a statutory wage; the Tamil Nadu and Goa ends run more on household and contract work. The same nut, two labour regimes.
