Mizo–Kuki–Chin Hills · Northeast Hill Massif
Terrain and eco-zones
Monsoon subtropical, moderated by elevation. Aizawl at a little over 1,100 m runs roughly 11–21 °C in winter and 20–29 °C in summer, which is why the region has no hot season in the plains sense and no need for the cooling foods that define kitchens two hundred kilometres to the west. Rainfall is 2,000–3,000 mm, falling from late May to September, and it falls on slopes rather than fields — the water is gone downhill within hours, which is the physical reason jhum and not irrigation became the farming system.

Through the year
| Season | Months | Typical | What it is like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | November–February | 11–21 °C | Dry, clear and cold at night on the high ridges. Harvest is in, Pawl Kut falls in December or January, and this is the season for smoking meat, since a low fire runs continuously in the house anyway. |
| Chapchar | February–March | 15–26 °C | The gap between clearing a jhum plot and burning it, when the felled bamboo is drying and there is nothing to do. Chapchar Kut is placed precisely in that gap; the festival exists because the farming calendar left a hole in it. |
| Summer | April–May | 20–29 °C | Pre-monsoon storms, burning and sowing of the jhum plots, and the first wild greens of the year. |
| Monsoon | June–September | 20–27 °C | Continuous cloud, leeches and landslides. Hill roads close without notice, and the eastern crossings are the least reliable part of the network. |
| Post-monsoon | October | 18–27 °C | The clearest month, and the start of the harvest. Mim Kut falls at the end of the maize and Job's tears harvest in August or September, just before it. |
Best time to visitOctober to March, with two fixed points worth planning around — Chapchar Kut in the first week of March at Aizawl, when Cheraw is danced publicly at scale, and the November–December cold, which is the best window for Phawngpui and the southern hills. Inner Line Permits apply to Mizoram for Indian visitors from outside the state and should be arranged before travelling.
