Kalidasa	Traditionally c. 4th–5th century	Poet and dramatist	Associated with Ujjain throughout his work — the Meghaduta routes its cloud messenger deliberately over the city and lingers there. Ujjain has run an annual Kalidasa Samaroh of Sanskrit drama and scholarship since 1958 on the strength of the association.
Raja Bhoja	c. 1010–1055	Paramara king and author	Ruled Malwa from Dhar and is credited with Sanskrit works on poetics, architecture and astronomy, including the Samarangana Sutradhara. The plateau's memory of him is as a scholar first and a king second, which is unusual.
Hoshang Shah	r. 1406–1435	Sultan of Malwa	Moved the Malwa capital to Mandu and built the city that survives there. His marble tomb is the first of its kind in India and is the acknowledged ancestor of a much more famous one.
Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati	16th century	Ruler and singer	The last independent sultan of Malwa and the singer associated with him. Their story survives as a body of Malvi and Hindi verse and as two buildings on the Mandu escarpment; Malwa fell to Akbar's forces in 1561.
Malhar Rao Holkar	1693–1766	Maratha commander	Established Holkar authority over Malwa in the 1730s and made Indore, then a customs post on a crossing, into an administrative centre — the beginning of the plateau's Maratha century.
Ahilyabai Holkar	1725–1795	Ruler	Governed the Holkar state for nearly thirty years from Maheshwar, funding temple, ghat and rest-house construction from Somnath to Kashi, and established the weaving that became the Maheshwari sari. She belongs to Nimar geographically and to both regions politically.
Kumar Gandharva	1924–1992	Hindustani vocalist	Settled at Dewas, lost the use of one lung to tuberculosis, and rebuilt his singing around the Malwa folk melody he had spent years listening to. His nirguni Kabir remains the most widely heard version of a repertoire that is otherwise entirely oral.
Prahlad Singh Tipanya	b. 1954	Folk singer	A schoolteacher from Luniyakhedi in Ujjain district who took the Malwa Kabir singing tradition from village satsangs to national and international stages, singing in Malvi with tambura and khartal. Padma Shri, 2011.
Lata Mangeshkar	1929–2022	Playback singer	Born in Indore, where her father's theatre company was performing. The city keeps the claim visibly, and it is a fair one — the Holkar capital was on the Marathi theatre circuit precisely because of its Deccan ties.
Rahat Indori	1950–2020	Urdu poet	An Indore poet and teacher who took the mushaira from a literary form to a mass one, and whose couplets circulate far outside the Urdu-reading public.
Johnny Walker	1926–2003	Actor	Born Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi at Indore; became Hindi cinema's defining comic actor of the 1950s and 1960s.
Ustad Amir Khan	1912–1974	Hindustani vocalist	Born at Indore, and the founder of the Indore gharana of khayal — an unusually slow vilambit, a merukhand approach to phrase-building, and an influence on nearly every subsequent generation of singers.
