Traditions that continue past an administrative line. Written once at the corridor level and referenced from every region it crosses, never duplicated.
Maratha Kitchen Corridor
Poha, sabudana khichdi, puran poli, shrikhand and the nine-yard nauvari drape, carried north over the Vindhyas by Holkar, Puar and Scindia administration and settlement from the 1730s.
How it diverges: Malwa keeps the dish and changes the finish — Indore's poha is dusted with jeeravan and buried under sev at the counter, which no Maharashtrian pohewala does. Maharashtra keeps coconut and kokum in the savoury kitchen; Malwa dropped both except in the khopra patty.
Licit Poppy Corridor
Legal opium poppy cultivation under licence, the hand-lancing technique, the minimum-yield rule that governs licence renewal, and the processing chain that ends at a government opium and alkaloid works.
How it diverges: Mandsaur and Neemuch on this plateau and Chittorgarh and Pratapgarh across the line are one continuous tract with one dialect; Barabanki in the eastern Gangetic plain is a separate island of the same licensing system. The alkaloid works sit at Neemuch and at Ghazipur.
Bafla and Bati Corridor
The baked wheat ball eaten with dal, ghee and a garlic chutney, and its feast-scale cooking over open embers at picnics and weddings.
How it diverges: Malwa boils before baking and calls the result a bafla; Rajasthan bakes only, and calls it a bati. Hadoti adds a third element, katt — the crumbed sweet made from unsalted bread, ghee and jaggery — which Malwa does not make.
Malvi Speech Corridor
Malvi itself, running north-west through its Rajawadi and Sondhwadi registers into Mewari and Hadauti with no break a speaker can identify, and carrying its Maach verse forms and Kabir singing repertoire with it.
How it diverges: The interstate line cuts the dialect continuum at right angles. Speakers on one side are counted as Hindi speakers and on the other are counted under Rajasthani, so the same speech is filed twice under two different parent languages — a census artefact, not a linguistic fact.
Kabir Nirguni Corridor
Kabir's verse, transmitted as sung repertoire rather than as text — the same padas moving between Malwa's village singing parties, the Kabir panth's monastic centres and the Rajasthani nirguni tradition.
How it diverges: Malwa sings in Malvi to tambura, khartal and dholak, at night sessions that run for hours; the panth's institutional centres in the east treat the same verses as scripture to be read. The Malwa line is the one that reached national audiences, through Kumar Gandharva and later Prahlad Singh Tipanya.
Bhil Country Corridor
Bhili and Bhilali speech, the Bhagoria pre-Holi market festival, Pithora wall painting, and a silver ornament vocabulary — all running continuously along the Vindhya's western arm and down the Aravalli's southern end.
How it diverges: Pithora painting is strongest among the Rathwa and Bhilala on the Gujarat side; Bhagoria is documented most heavily on the Madhya Pradesh side. Malwa's plateau core has neither, which is precisely why the scarp counts as a boundary rather than a gradient.
