Places

Khangchendzonga National ParkNatureUNESCOSikkim

Inscribed in 2016 as India's first mixed World Heritage site — listed for its glacial and alpine ecology and for the sacred narratives attached to the massif in the same document. It covers roughly a quarter of Sikkim, holds snow leopard, blue sheep and red panda, and includes the Zemu glacier below Kanchenjunga.

Best time: April–May and October–November.

Darjeeling Himalayan RailwayHeritageUNESCODarjeeling

An 88 km two-foot-gauge line completed in 1881, inscribed by UNESCO in 1999. It gains its height with six zigzags and three loops instead of tunnels, holding an average gradient near 1 in 28, and still runs B-class 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotives built between 1889 and 1925. Ghum, at 2,258 m, is the highest railway station in India.

Getting there: Joy rides run Darjeeling–Ghum via the Batasia Loop; the full run starts at New Jalpaiguri.

Yuksom and Dubdi MonasteryHeritageSikkim

The place where three lamas from Tibet consecrated Phuntsog Namgyal as the first Chogyal in 1642 — the name means the meeting place of the three. Dubdi, established in 1701 on the ridge above, is the oldest monastery in Sikkim, and the Dzongri and Goecha La trek to the foot of Kanchenjunga starts from the same village.

Pemayangtse Monastery and RabdentseHeritageSikkim

A Nyingma monastery of 1705 whose top floor holds Zangdok Palri — a seven-tiered wooden model of Guru Rinpoche's celestial palace, carved over several years by a single monk. Twenty minutes' walk away are the ruins of Rabdentse, Sikkim's second capital, abandoned and now standing in forest.

Tashiding MonasteryPilgrimageSikkim

On a hill between the Rathong and Rangeet, and the site of the Bumchu — a sealed vase of holy water opened once a year, its level read as an indication of the year ahead and then topped up from the river and sealed again for twelve months.

Best time: Bumchu falls in the first Tibetan month, usually February–March.

Rumtek MonasteryPilgrimageSikkim

The Dharma Chakra Centre, built in the 1960s by the sixteenth Karmapa as the Karma Kagyu seat in exile, on a ridge facing Gangtok across a valley. Its Losar cham cycle is the most attended in Sikkim.

Namgyal Institute of TibetologyHeritageGangtok

Founded in 1958 to hold Tibetan manuscripts, thangkas and ritual objects, and still one of the most serious collections of Tibetological material outside Tibet. It sits in a wooded compound with the Do-Drul chorten above it.

Tsomgo Lake and Nathu LaNatureSikkim

A glacial lake at 3,750 m that freezes in winter, on the old caravan road to the Chola passes. Nathu La, at about 4,310 m, was the trade route to the Chumbi valley and Tibet — closed after 1962 and reopened for limited border trade in 2006. Permits are required and conditions change; check before travelling.

Best time: April–May, October–November.

Lachen, Lachung and YumthangNatureSikkim

Two head villages that run their own affairs through the Dzumsa, at the top of the Teesta's two source valleys. Yumthang below Lachung is a rhododendron valley with hot springs; the Gurudongmar plateau above Lachen crosses 5,000 m and is sacred to Buddhist, Sikh and Hindu visitors alike.

Best time: March–May for rhododendron; October for clarity.

Tiger Hill and Observatory HillHillDarjeeling

Tiger Hill at about 2,590 m gives the standard sunrise view of Kanchenjunga, with Everest, Lhotse and Makalu visible far to the west on a clear morning. Observatory Hill in the town centre carries the Mahakal shrine, where a Buddhist gompa and a Shaiva shrine share the same rock — the Dorje Ling monastery that stood here gave Darjeeling its name.

Best time: October–December.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological ParkHeritageDarjeeling

HMI was set up in 1954 after the 1953 Everest ascent, with Tenzing Norgay as its first director of field training; its museum holds expedition equipment and its rock-climbing courses still run on Tenzing Rock. The adjoining zoological park, opened in 1958, runs conservation breeding for snow leopard and red panda.

Singalila National Park and SandakphuNatureDarjeeling

The ridge that forms the region's western wall, walked from Manebhanjyang to Sandakphu at 3,636 m — the highest point in West Bengal, and the one place from which Kanchenjunga's "sleeping Buddha" outline and the Everest–Lhotse–Makalu group are visible in a single sweep. Red panda country, and rhododendron forest through April.

Best time: April–May and October–November.

KalimpongUrbanKalimpong

A ridge town that was the Indian end of the mule trade to Tibet through Jelep La until 1962 — wool down, manufactures up — and became, in that period, a publishing and schooling centre with an unusually mixed population. Durpin monastery sits above the town; the nurseries below it supply orchids, gladioli and cacti across India.

Makaibari and the Kurseong tea slopeNatureDarjeeling

Kurseong sits in the middle of the oldest planted stretch of the ridge, where the first commercial factory in the district was built in 1859. Gardens here run from 900 m to 1,800 m on one hillside, which is why two sections of the same estate can be picked a fortnight apart.

Best time: March–May for first and second flush.

Mirik and the Teesta–Rangeet confluence at TriveniNatureDarjeeling

Mirik is a lake town on the lower ridge with cardamom and tea below it; Triveni, where the Rangeet joins the Teesta, is the region's central hydrological fact and a mela site at Maghe Sankranti.
