Siang & Adi Belt · Eastern Himalaya & Brahmaputra Belt
Established in 1911 and the oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh, laid out at the point where the Siang leaves the hills and begins to braid. It is the region's market, its college town and the place the largest Solung is held. The riverfront here is where the gorge visibly ends.
Best time: October–April. Getting there: About 150 km from Dibrugarh via the Bogibeel bridge; Murkongselek is the nearest railhead.
A black rock face above the Siang near Rotung where Adi fighters made a stand against the British column in 1912 during the Abor Expedition. It is a memorial site of real local weight, and it is the landscape feature the region's own histories start from.
A gorge village on the Siang where the political officer Noel Williamson was killed in 1911, the event that triggered the Abor Expedition. A memorial slab to Williamson still stands in the village, an unusually direct piece of frontier history sitting in an ordinary settlement.
The upper gorge road. Yingkiong is the last substantial town; Tuting, further up, is where the households turn Memba and Buddhist and where the river-running expeditions put in. Gelling, above Tuting, is the last village on the Siang.
Best time: November–March.
A high, flat valley on the Yargyap Chu, settled by Memba and Ramo and Bokar communities, with the Samten Yongcha monastery on a ridge above the town. The contrast with the Adi villages a day's drive downstream — architecture, food, faith, dress — is the sharpest cultural gradient in the region.
Best time: October–April. Getting there: Roughly 190 km by road from Aalo; a long day, and weather-dependent.
The Galo headquarters town, at the meeting of the Siyom and the Sipu, and the centre of Mopin. The suspension bridge over the Siyom is the accessible example of the region's bridge-building idea, even where cable has replaced cane.
Best time: April for Mopin; October–March otherwise.
A Galo town in the Hie valley that has run the Basar Confluence, a community-organised festival, since 2016 — one of the few tourism events in the Northeast designed and administered by the village community rather than by a tourism department.
The Apatani plateau: permanent irrigated rice terraces stocked with fish, worked without plough or draught animal, with bamboo and pine groves managed on the ridges above. It has been on India's UNESCO tentative list as a cultural landscape since 2014. The Dree festival falls in early July and the Ziro music festival in September.
Best time: March–October.
The Subansiri basin's market town, Tagin and Galo, and the road junction for the whole western half of the belt. The Trans-Arunachal highway runs through it.
A ruined temple site at Likabali on the last foothill above the plain, with carved granite panels and sculpture excavated from the mound and dated broadly to the tenth to fourteenth centuries. It is the only substantial stone-building site in the belt, and it sits precisely where the hills meet the valley — a plains temple tradition reaching its upper limit.
Best time: November–March.
Around 483 km² of steep, almost trackless forest between roughly 400 and 3,000 m, holding takin, red panda, serow and clouded leopard. Access is on foot and takes days; it is among the least-visited national parks in India.
Riverine grassland and sand islands in the braided Siang just below Pasighat, named for the Adi leader Daying Ering. Wild buffalo, hog deer and large numbers of wintering waterfowl; the habitat is the same char-and-grassland system that continues downstream into Assam.
Best time: November–March.
A multi-day river descent through the gorge, run in the winter low-water window. It is the only way to see the section of the region that has no road, and it passes villages that are still supplied by cane bridge and porter.
