Dialect and oral traditions

One language, four scripts. Malayalam is written in its own script, but the same speech was written in Arabic script by Mappila Muslims, in Syriac by Syrian Christians and in Hebrew by the Cochin Jews — three communities old enough that their liturgical registers are part of the language's history, not a borrowing.

Speech varieties

Malayalam (Central register)Dravidian, Southern

The Thrissur–Ernakulam register that became the broadcast standard. Retains a heavy Sanskrit lexicon in formal use and a wholly separate spoken vocabulary.

Arabi-MalayalamMalayalam in Arabic script

The written medium of Mappila literature for centuries, with extra letters invented for Malayalam sounds Arabic lacks. Still used for religious texts and Mappila pattu lyrics.

Suriyani MalayalamMalayalam in Syriac script

Karshoni — Malayalam written in East Syriac letters, used by Saint Thomas Christians for liturgy and record-keeping into the twentieth century.

Judeo-MalayalamMalayalam, Jewish variety

The speech of the Cochin Jews, with Hebrew and Aramaic loanwords and a distinct womenʼs song tradition. Effectively moved to Israel with its speakers.

Indigenous terminology

Term	Meaning
Kudampuli കുടംപുളി	Garcinia gummi-gutta, smoke-dried and used to sour fish curry. Not interchangeable with tamarind — it gives a darker, smokier acid.
Kavu കാവ്	A sacred grove attached to a shrine, left uncut. Functionally the oldest conservation institution on the coast.
Veedu വീട്	House — but a named house, carried across generations and often used in place of a surname.
Thattukada തട്ടുകട	A roadside food cart working after dark; a distinct cuisine, not a lesser version of restaurant food.
Ularthiyathu ഉലർത്തിയത്	Dry-fried until all moisture is gone — a doneness, not a dish.
Sadya സദ്യ	A banana-leaf banquet with a fixed sequence and a fixed position on the leaf for each item.
Chundan vallam ചുണ്ടൻ വള്ളം	Snake boat — over 100 feet, crewed by around a hundred rowers, owned by a village rather than a person.

ആന വായിൽ അമ്പഴങ്ങ	A hog plum in an elephantʼs mouth	A quantity so small it is not worth counting.
Kadalinu appuram kara undu	There is land beyond the sea	Said in a coast that has sent workers to the Gulf for fifty years — there is always somewhere else.
Ellam mangalyam	Everything is auspicious	A shrug used to close an argument nobody is going to win.
