Marudhamalaiतीर्थCoimbatore

A Murugan hill temple on the western edge of Coimbatore, reached by a stepped climb or a bus up the hill road, and busiest on Thai Poosam and on Tuesdays. The hill itself is a spur of the Western Ghats and the view east across the plateau shows the whole flat lee of the gap.

Perur Patteeswarar templeविरासतCoimbatore

A Shiva temple on the Noyyal with a seventeenth-century Kanaka Sabha hall whose granite pillars carry deeply undercut figures — riders, dancers and mythological groups — carved almost free of their columns. Its foundation is much older than the hall; the sculpture is why people come.

KodumanalविरासतErode

An excavated early-historic settlement on the Noyyal, occupied from roughly the third century BCE to the third century CE, with bead workshops in quartz, carnelian and beryl, iron smelting furnaces, crucible steel production and Tamil-Brahmi inscribed potsherds. It sat on the trans-peninsular route between the Malabar ports and the Coromandel, and its beads and steel went into that trade.

Sangameswarar temple, Bhavani (Kooduthurai)तीर्थErode

A temple at the confluence of the Bhavani and the Cauvery, where the two rivers meet at a stone-stepped bank. The site is used for ancestral rites and for the Aadi Perukku observance, when the rising river is honoured at the water's edge.

Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserveवन्यजीवErode

Dry deciduous forest along the Cauvery, declared a tiger reserve in 2013, and the piece of ground that connects the Eastern and Western Ghats. Elephants use it as the link between the Nilgiri forests and the hills to the east, which is the reason it matters out of proportion to its fame.

Hogenakkalप्रकृतिDharmapuri

The Cauvery narrows into a carbonatite gorge and falls in a set of chutes, with round coracles worked by boatmen who spin them deliberately in the current. The rock here is unusual — a carbonate igneous intrusion — and the falls run hardest from July to October.

Yercaud and the Shevaroy Hillsपहाड़Salem

A small hill station at about 1,500 m on an isolated massif above Salem, with coffee, orange and pepper on the slopes and a lake at the top. Reached by a road of twenty numbered hairpins, and far quieter than the Nilgiri stations.

Kolli Hillsपहाड़Namakkal

A flat-topped range reached by a road of some seventy hairpin bends, holding the Arappaleeswarar temple, the Agaya Gangai waterfall and a long-standing minor-millet and jackfruit farming system that has been the subject of serious conservation work.

Tiruchengodeतीर्थNamakkal

A red rock hill carrying the Ardhanareeswarar temple, reached by a stepped climb, with the Ponnar–Shankar tradition of the Annanmar epic attached to the surrounding country. The town below is the centre of India's borewell rig industry, which is not a coincidence — the two things are both about what is under this ground.

Mettupalayam and the Nilgiri Mountain Railwayविरासतयूनेस्कोCoimbatore

A metre-gauge line opened in 1899 that climbs from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam, using an Abt rack and pinion between Mettupalayam and Coonoor to hold a gradient of one in twelve — the steepest railway in Asia. Inscribed in 2005 as part of the Mountain Railways of India. The rack section is the interesting one, and it is where the region's slope ends and the plateau above begins.

Anamalai Tiger Reserve and the Valparai slopeवन्यजीवCoimbatore

The forest block on the southern rim of the gap, rising from dry thorn at the foot to rainforest fragments around the tea estates at Valparai. The lion-tailed macaque persists in those fragments, and the road up carries forty numbered hairpins.

Dhyanalinga and the Velliangiri foothillsतीर्थCoimbatore

A consecrated linga installed in 1999 in a domed meditation hall at the foot of the Velliangiri hills, built by the Isha Foundation and open to visitors of any faith without ritual. The hills behind it carry a much older barefoot pilgrimage climb undertaken around Shivaratri.

Amaravathi confluence and Pasupatheeswarar temple, KarurविरासतKarur

Karur stands where the Amaravathi meets the Cauvery and has yielded Roman coins and early-historic material; it is identified with a Chera centre named in the Sangam corpus. The Pasupatheeswarar temple is the town's principal shrine and carries inscriptions from successive dynasties.

Siruvaniप्रकृतिCoimbatore

A small river and reservoir in the hills west of Coimbatore, supplying the city and locally held to have the best-tasting water in India — a claim repeated so consistently that it has become part of the city's self-description. The catchment is in forest and access is restricted.
