Kongu Nadu · Deccan Inland Plateau
This is the region that clothes the country and dresses plainly itself. Its looms and mills produce the cotton saree, the blanket, the bedsheet and — since the 1970s — most of India's knitted garments, and its own everyday dress is a white veshti, a shoulder towel and an unfussy cotton saree. The one place ornament is not restrained is the wedding, where the thali and the gold worn with it announce a clan before anyone has spoken.

An unstitched white lower cloth, worn full length or hitched at the knee for work, with a towel over the shoulder that serves as headcloth, sweat rag, seat and, at a meeting, as the thing you fold and hold to show you are listening.

Handloom or mill cotton in plain checks and stripes with a contrast border, worn six-yard in the towns and nine-yard by older women in the villages. Built for heat and hard washing rather than for display.

A cotton body woven with a silk warp or silk borders, giving a cotton drape with a silk sheen and a zari edge. Lighter and cheaper than a silk saree and specifically made for a hot dry climate.

A silk saree with the thali cord tied over it — and the thali itself is the identifying object, strung with pendants whose form varies by clan and is read as such by anyone from the region.

The thick striped cotton blanket used as a floor covering, a bedroll, a shawl on cold nights on the slope and the standard gift at a village function. It is furniture as much as it is cloth.

Thick woven cotton carpets and blankets in bold stripes and checks, made at Bhavani since the late nineteenth century on pit looms — the weaver sits in a pit with the warp at floor level, which is what lets a single person handle a heavy wide beat. Registered as a geographical indication in 2005–06.
Cotton sarees with silk zari borders, handloom-woven with Sirumugai as the main production centre. Registered as a geographical indication in 2014–15.
Silk woven in and around Salem, registered as a geographical indication in 2007–08. The trade sits alongside a much larger power-loom sector making silk-blend dress material.
Not a heritage textile but the largest knitted-garment cluster in India — spinning, knitting, dyeing, printing and stitching within a few kilometres of one another, growing out of a local banian trade from the 1970s onward. It is the reason a town of this size has a customs house and a currency-exchange street.
Table linen, curtains, kitchen cloth and bed linen woven and made up for export, a cluster built on the handloom trade of the Amaravathi towns and converted almost entirely to made-ups.
Cotton bedsheets, towels and dhotis from a dense weaving belt along the Noyyal and Bhavani, sold through the Erode wholesale market, which trades cloth on fixed weekly days the way it trades turmeric.
