The Palakkad Gap Corridor
Everything — the highway, two railway lines, the wind, the early-historic trade route, and a great deal of marriage and temple traffic. Long-settled Tamil-speaking households live on the western side of the gap and Malayalam-speaking ones on the eastern, and the same black soil, cattle type and dry-season calendar run through both.
The line that does change is language and cooking fat. West of the gap the kitchen is coconut oil, coconut milk and rice; east of it, sesame oil, pepper and millet. The gap does not divide the geography at all and divides the culture almost completely.
The Bead and Steel Corridor
The early-historic trans-peninsular route — beryl, carnelian and quartz beads and crucible steel made at Kodumanal, moving west through the gap to the Malabar ports and east to the Coromandel trading settlements, into a network that reached the Roman Mediterranean.
The western terminals became Malayalam-speaking port country and the eastern ones Tamil coastal towns; the workshops in the middle simply stopped, and the site was farmland until it was excavated.
Turmeric Market Corridor
Cured turmeric, and the grading and auction practice that goes with it. Erode, Sangli in the Maharashtra Desh and Nizamabad in Telangana are the three floors on which Indian turmeric prices are effectively set, and traders work all three.
Erode's crop is grown on lighter soil under well irrigation and cures to a different colour and curcumin profile than the Maharashtra crop; the two are traded as distinct commodities rather than as substitutes.
Nilgiri Biosphere Elephant Corridor
A continuous forest block linking Sathyamangalam, Mudumalai, Bandipur, Nagarahole and Wayanad — the largest Asian elephant population anywhere — together with the forest communities on its slopes and their honey, herb and seasonal vocabulary.
Sathyamangalam is the piece that connects the Eastern Ghats to the Western, so it carries movement the others do not; management, night traffic rules and tourism policy differ at every boundary the animals cross.
Millet Gruel Corridor
Pearl and finger millet cooked as a soured gruel or a stiff ball — koozh and kali here, ragi mudde on the plateau to the north-west, sangati in the Telugu dry country — with the same eating method and the same buttermilk alongside.
The souring is the local variable. Here the gruel is fermented overnight in an earthen pot and drunk cold with raw onion; on the plateau the ball is eaten fresh with a hot broth and never soured at all.
Sathyamangalam Ghat Corridor
The old road across the Cauvery and up through the forest — cattle, salt, forest produce and pilgrims — linking the Bannari and Male Mahadeshwara shrines and the goddess festivals on both sides of the hills.
The songs change language at the top of the ghat while the festival dates and the offerings do not, which is the usual sign that the traffic is older than the languages that now carry it.
