Bahmani Successor Corridor

KarnatakaTelanganaMaharashtra

Dakhni Urdu as a spoken language, the domed tomb-and-madrasa building idiom, sealed-pot rice cooking, and the metal, tile and inlay crafts that the Bahmani court and its five successor states supported. The Gulbarga-to-Bidar capital sequence is the trunk from which Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmadnagar and Berar branch.

Golconda's successor city, Hyderabad, became the market and the modern face of the whole tradition, and absorbed the credit for crafts made elsewhere — bidri above all. Bijapur took the same idiom towards enormous unbuttressed domes. Marathwada carries the identical layer over Marathi, and here it sits over Kannada; the food, the dress and the Urdu are nearly the same and the substrate language is not.

Sharana and Vachana Corridor

Karnataka

The vachana form, the ankita signature, the doctrine of kayaka, and the Anubhava Mantapa as a model of open assembly — carried out of Kalyana in 1167 when the movement dispersed, and preserved on palm leaf in mathas across the Kannada country.

Two of the movement's central figures, Akka Mahadevi and Allama Prabhu, came into Kalyana from the Ghats to the south-west; the manuscripts went the other way and were edited into print in the plain and in the Ghats rather than here. The region produced the literature and lost custody of it, which is why its major editions carry the names of scholars from other districts.

Jowar Rotti Corridor

KarnatakaMaharashtraTelanganaAndhra Pradesh

The dryland plate — jowar bread, stuffed brinjal cooked in its own masala oil, a dry pounded seed powder in place of a gravy, raw onion and green chilli, and buttermilk to finish.

Maharashtra bakes bhakri soft and eats it the same day; North Karnataka bakes it thin and dries it hard so it keeps for weeks; Telangana's jonna rotte is thicker and pressed by hand on a cloth. The powders diverge the same way — groundnut and flaxseed here, groundnut and garlic in Khandesh, sesame and chilli further east.

Tungabhadra Command Corridor

KarnatakaAndhra PradeshTelangana

Canal irrigation off one river and the crop shift it caused — jowar and cotton giving way to paddy within two generations, along with the sona masuri rice trade, the mill towns and a diet that changed from bread to rice on the same soil.

The Vijayanagara-era anicuts and channels around Hampi still deliver water and predate the 1953 dam by four centuries; below the dam the canal systems on either bank feed different states and different crop calendars, while the unirrigated interfluve between them stayed on millet and looks like a different country.

Lambani Tanda Corridor

KarnatakaTelanganaMaharashtraAndhra PradeshRajasthan

Gor Boli speech, the tanda settlement, and a mirror-and-coin embroidery whose stitch vocabulary is recognisably the same from Sandur to the Marathwada plateau — carried along the bullock caravan routes the community ran before rail.

In Sandur the embroidery was reorganised in the 1980s into a marketed craft with a geographical indication and now appears mostly on bags and jackets; in the Telangana tandas it is still made largely to be worn. The everyday costume is retreating to the older generation on both sides at about the same rate.

Village Muharram Corridor

KarnatakaTelanganaMaharashtra

The panja standards, the ten nights of drumming, the fire-pit, and a body of Muharram narrative song sung in the local language rather than in Urdu.

Across much of this plateau the observance is kept jointly by households of several communities, with hereditary roles attached to particular families in a village. The Kannada-language rivayat repertoire is distinct from the Telugu and Marathi versions of the same narratives, and the drumming patterns differ village by village rather than by language.
