Simhachalamतीर्थVisakhapatnam
A hill temple to Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha whose image is covered in a thick coat of sandalwood paste for the entire year and uncovered for about twelve hours on Akshaya Tritiya. The building carries inscriptions of the Eastern Ganga rulers of Kalinga — the dynasty that built Konark — which is the clearest architectural evidence that this coast's religious networks ran north as readily as south.
सबसे अच्छा समय: Akshaya Tritiya for Chandanotsavam; otherwise November–February.
Thotlakonda, Bavikonda and PavurallakondaविरासतVisakhapatnam
Three hilltop Buddhist monastic complexes overlooking the sea north of Visakhapatnam, with stupas, chaitya halls, viharas and rock-cut cisterns, occupied from roughly the second century BCE. They sit directly above the shipping lane, which is not a coincidence: the monasteries were supported by maritime trade and sited where they could see it.
Borra cavesप्रकृतिAlluri Sitharama Raju
A limestone cave system cut by the Gosthani, with stalactite and stalagmite formations across several chambers about eighty metres below the surface. It was reported to science by William King of the Geological Survey of India in 1807, and it was in use as a local shrine long before that.
कैसे पहुँचें: On the Kothavalasa–Kirandul railway line and the Araku road, about 90 km from Visakhapatnam.
Araku valleyपहाड़Alluri Sitharama Raju
A broad valley at about 900 m surrounded by higher ridges, farmed by Adivasi households growing coffee under shade alongside pepper, millet and vegetables. The approach by rail is the point of the journey: the Kothavalasa–Kirandul line, built to move iron ore, climbs the scarp through dozens of tunnels and high bridges and is one of the more dramatic pieces of railway engineering in the country.
सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February.
Lambasingiपहाड़Alluri Sitharama Raju
A village on the Chintapalli plateau that records the lowest temperatures in Andhra Pradesh, occasionally close to zero in December and January. Its local fame rests entirely on that one measurement.
Arasavalli Suryanarayana templeतीर्थSrikakulam
One of the few sun temples in India in continuous worship rather than in ruins. It is oriented so that on Ratha Saptami mornings the rising sun's light reaches the feet of the image through the entrance openings — an alignment the temple is built around rather than a coincidence it advertises.
सबसे अच्छा समय: Ratha Saptami (January–February).
Srikurmamतीर्थSrikakulam
A temple to Vishnu in his tortoise form, west-facing, with two flagstaffs and several hundred inscriptions cut into its pillars and walls in Telugu, Odia and Sanskrit. The inscription wall is the substantive attraction: it is a continuous administrative and donative record of this coast across centuries.
SalihundamविरासतSrikakulam
A Buddhist site on a hill above the Vamsadhara near its mouth, with a group of stupas, monastery foundations and sculpture running from early aniconic phases through to Vajrayana images. From the top the river mouth and the old port are both visible, which explains the siting.
KalingapatnamविरासतSrikakulam
The Vamsadhara's mouth and one of the oldest working ports on this coast, later a Dutch and then a British anchorage. What remains is a lighthouse, a Dutch-period cemetery, a dargah with an annual urs, a fishing beach and no port at all.
Bheemunipatnam (Bheemili)समुद्र तटVisakhapatnam
A Dutch settlement from the seventeenth century, with a walled Dutch cemetery of unusual funerary architecture still standing above the beach. It is one of the oldest constituted municipalities in India, dating from the 1860s, and now effectively a suburb at the end of a beach road.
VisakhapatnamशहरीVisakhapatnam
A natural deep-water harbour sheltered behind the Dolphin's Nose headland, which is why a port, a shipyard, the Eastern Naval Command and later a steel plant all ended up here rather than anywhere else on this coast. The waterfront runs from a working fishing harbour through a beach road to a decommissioned submarine kept as a museum.
VizianagaramविरासतVizianagaram
The Pusapati estate town, with an eighteenth-century fort, the Pydithalli Ammavaru temple, and the institutions the estate endowed — a music college opened in 1919 and the schools where Gurajada Apparao taught and wrote. A small town with a documented effect on Telugu music and literature out of all proportion to its size.
BobbiliविरासतVizianagaram
A fort town remembered for the 1757 siege, and the place a specific musical instrument comes from. The veena workshops are in and around the town and can be visited; the fort's story is told in ballads before it is told in books.
EtikoppakaविरासतAnakapalli
A village on the Varaha river where lacquer toys are turned on lathes and coloured by friction with dyed lac. The workshops are working premises, not showrooms, and the dye plants are grown or gathered nearby.
Paderu and Chintapalliपहाड़Alluri Sitharama Raju
The administrative and market centres of the agency tracts, with weekly markets that are the best place to see what the ghats actually produce and which languages actually meet. The roads up are slow and close in heavy rain.
