The 1757 siege of Bobbili and its aftermath, sung as heroic narrative with named characters. Both estates involved still exist as towns, which gives the ballad an unusually specific audience.

Jamukula kathaTelugu

Heroic and genealogical narrative delivered to the growl of the jamuku pot-drum, with the lead singer interrupted and corrected by two responders.

Puranic narrative sung in Carnatic ragas by a standing solo performer who also speaks, comments and improvises. Codified at Vizianagaram in the 1890s.

Work songs timed to the rhythm of pushing a boat through surf and hauling a net, sung by the fishing communities of the Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam coast.
