ChandanotsavamAkshaya Tritiya (April–May)The one day a year the Simhachalam image is seen without its sandalwood coating. The paste is removed before dawn, darshan runs for about twelve hours, and the coat is applied again the same night. Crowds are counted in lakhs and the whole city's transport is rearranged for it.
SirimanotsavamThe Tuesday after Vijayadashami (September–October)Vizianagaram's festival for Pydithalli Ammavaru. A tall tree, identified by a dream and felled for the occasion, is mounted on a cart with the temple's chosen bearer bound to its outer end and swung high over the crowd as the cart is drawn past the fort three times.
Ratha Saptami at ArasavalliMagha Shuddha Saptami (January–February)The morning on which the temple's solar alignment is demonstrated rather than merely described, with the sun's first light reaching the image. A chariot procession follows.
SankrantiMid-January, three daysBhogi fires, rice-flour muggu at every doorstep, decorated cattle led through the streets, and the return of everyone who works elsewhere. It is the largest domestic festival of the Telugu year and this region empties into its villages for it.
UgadiChaitra Shuddha Padyami (March–April)The Telugu new year, marked by the ugadi pachadi that combines six tastes in one preparation, and by the panchanga sravanam — a public reading of the year's almanac.
Itika Pandaga and the agency spring ritesChaitra (March–April)Hill communities' spring observances — a ceremonial hunt, the first taking of the season's forest produce, and village dancing. They run on a different calendar from the plains festivals happening simultaneously a few kilometres downhill.
The Kalingapatnam ursAnnually, on the lunar calendarAn observance at the dargah beside the Vamsadhara mouth, drawing pilgrims of both faiths from the coastal villages. Old port towns on this coast tend to hold shrines like this, and the attendance is a residue of the trade.
Visakha UtsavWinter, usually December–JanuaryA city festival of music, food and beach events, run by the municipality. It is a modern institution and it is the main occasion on which the region's folk forms are performed to an urban audience.
