Utkal · Eastern Coastal Plains

Sabara–Jagannath Corridor

Odisha

The deity's own origin narrative runs inland — Nilamadhava worshipped by a Sabara chief in the forest, the image made from daru found floating, and the Daitapati servitors at Puri who claim Sabara descent and who alone handle the images during the Ratha Jatra and the Nabakalebara.

On the coast the story functions as the charter of a very large institution; in the Eastern Ghats uplands it is a claim of prior right, and the hill temple that states it most directly — Sabar Srikhetra at Koraput — is also the one open to visitors of any faith.

Bay of Bengal Maritime Memory

OdishaIDSri Lanka

The memory of the sadhaba merchant voyages east — kept alive not as history but as ritual: boats floated at dawn on Kartik Purnima, the week-long fair at Cuttack, and the sadhaba-bohu stories in which a merchant's household waits out a voyage.

On this side the trade left a festival, a vocabulary and a set of household tales; on the far side of the Bay it left epigraphy, temple form and script. The physical trade ended centuries ago and only the Indian side kept an annual observance of it.

Bandha Ikat Corridor

Odisha

Tie-resist dyeing of yarn before weaving, shared between the Nuapatna and Maniabandha looms of the coast and the Sambalpur–Bargarh looms up the Mahanadi.

The coastal Khandua weaves Gita Govinda text, temple and elephant motifs in a narrow red-and-orange palette for ritual use; the western bandha builds geometric phoda kumbha and rudraksha motifs in a wider palette for everyday wear. The technique is one; the vocabulary is two.

Gita Govinda Corridor

OdishaKeralaAssamWest Bengal

Jayadeva's ashtapadis, which became temple singing at Puri, sopana repertoire in Kerala's shrines, part of the Sattriya tradition in Assam and a staple of Bengali kirtan.

Only here is it embedded in a fixed daily ritual slot of one temple and woven as text into the cloth that temple's deity wears. Elsewhere it travelled as repertoire; here it stayed as procedure.

Chhau Corridor

OdishaJharkhandWest Bengal

The masked and unmasked Chhau traditions of Mayurbhanj, Seraikella and Purulia — a martial-derived dance form sharing a training vocabulary across the northern hills that this coast's plains meet.

Mayurbhanj Chhau is danced without a mask, Seraikella with a delicate painted one and Purulia with a large heavy one. The same form, told apart by the face.

Odia–Telugu Coastal Transition

OdishaAndhra Pradesh

South of Chilika the coastal plain continues without interruption and so does its temple and fishing economy, with Danda Nata, Ranapa stilt dancing and the Berhampur patta sari belonging to that transition zone.

The speech shifts gradually rather than at a line, the kitchen gets hotter and sourer going south, and the Jagannath calendar loses its grip as the Simhachalam and Srikurmam temple networks take over.
