Fermented Dried-Fish Belt
Small freshwater fish, sun-dried and then fermented into a paste or cake and used as the savoury base of a whole cuisine — berma here, shidal in the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, ngari in the Imphal valley, and shutki in its drier, less fermented form across the Bengal plain.
Berma is used dissolved into boiled vegetables in an oil-free kitchen; shidal is fried in mustard oil and pounded with chilli into a chutney; ngari is central to a valley cuisine with a far longer herb list; and the plains shutki stops short of full fermentation. The same preservation problem, solved four ways along one drainage system.
Bamboo-Steaming Culinary Corridor
Cooking inside a freshly cut green bamboo internode over embers, fermented bamboo shoot as the household sour agent, and leaf-parcel steaming — a single technique zone from the Chindwin escarpment to the Meghna floodplain.
Here the tube is filled with berma and vegetables and the result is gudok; in the Mizo hills it is filled with meat and seasoned with fermented pork fat; in the Brahmaputra valley it meets mustard oil and khar. Tripura is the western end of the corridor, where it runs straight into a delta kitchen that uses none of it.
Bengali Plains Continuity
Bengali speech in its eastern register, the fish-and-rice foodway, shutki, pitha at the winter solstice, dhamail sung at weddings, jatra staged at the winter melas, and the Durga puja calendar — continuous from this plain across the ranges into the Meghna floodplain and beyond.
On this side the Bengali plain sits against a hill population with a different language, calendar and kitchen, and the two have exchanged specific things — dried fish, bamboo shoot, festival dates — over centuries; on the delta side it does not, and the same cuisine develops without that pressure.
The Kuki-Chin Continuum
Halam, Darlong and the Mizo-speaking villages of the Jampui ridge belong to the Kuki-Chin language continuum that runs east through Mizoram into the Chin Hills and south into the Chittagong Hill Tracts — with the shared loin-loom textile grammar, the Roman-script hymnal, and the Cheraw bamboo dance that comes with it.
Inside this region these communities are a minority among Kokborok and Bengali speakers and have taken on local crops and festivals; on the Mizoram side the same languages are the majority and organise everything. The Darlong rosem, which has no counterpart further east, is what the western end of the continuum produced on its own.
Bodo-Garo Language and Textile Corridor
Kokborok's own family — Bodo and Dimasa in Assam, Garo in Meghalaya — and with it the women's wrapped woven cloth built from lengthwise bands on a loin loom: rignai here, dokhona among the Bodo, dakmanda among the Garo.
The Bodo and Garo areas kept eri and muga silk in the weave; Tripura's cloths are cotton and now largely acrylic. Tripura registered rignai pachra and risa as geographical indications in 2024 and the Bodo dokhona was registered separately — the same textile idea, protected under three different names.
Mid-April New Year Corridor
The solar new year at the middle of April, observed as Buisu by the Tripuri, Bizu by the Chakma, Sangrai by the Mog, jointly under a blended name in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, as Thingyan across Myanmar and as Bohag Bihu in the Brahmaputra valley — with water-throwing, new clothes, a mixed-vegetable dish and household visiting recurring across all of them.
The Buddhist observances — Chakma, Mog and Burmese — centre on water and on the monastery; the Tripuri Buisu and the Assamese Bihu centre on the agricultural year and the household. The date is shared, the calendar that fixes it is shared, and the theology is not.
