Undyed cotton with a gold border, and almost nothing else. The regional palette is a consequence of the loom rather than of taste — Balaramapuram's throw-shuttle pit looms weave fine unbleached cotton and set a kasavu border of flattened zari into the selvedge, so the cloth is white because the cotton was never dyed and gold because the border was never woven in anything else. Two ritual wardrobes sit on top of that base and both are unmissable in season: the pilgrim's black or blue mundu through November and December, and the built architecture of a Kathakali costume, which is closer to scaffolding than to clothing.

Two pieces of unstitched cotton — the mundu below and the neriyathu across the upper body — rather than one wrapped saree. The width of the kasavu border, not the cloth, is what marks the occasion.

A single wrap worn ankle-length and folded to the knee for work, with a thin thorthu over the shoulder that serves as towel, headcloth and carrying sling. Folding it up in front of a superior is still read as rudeness.

A white waist-length blouse worn with a mundu whose back is gathered into a stiff fan-shaped njori pleat. Now largely confined to older women and to weddings in the Kottayam and Changanassery belt.

Black or dark blue mundu, a rudraksha or tulsi mala worn from the day the 41-day vratham begins, and the irumudikettu, a two-compartment cloth bundle carried on the head with offerings in front and the pilgrim's own provisions behind.

A skirt built out over a frame from many metres of starched cloth, worn with a wooden kireedam, long silver nails and the chutti — a raised white rim built up on the face from rice paste and paper by a specialist, over several hours, while the performer lies still.

A mask and headdress cut from the sheath of the areca palm and painted with soot, turmeric and leaf pigment, sometimes several metres across, carried rather than worn and burnt or discarded after the night's performance.

बुनाई और कपड़े
Handwoven unbleached cotton in very high counts with a pure zari kasavu border, produced on throw-shuttle pit looms by Shaliyar weaver families settled at Balaramapuram under Travancore patronage at the turn of the nineteenth century. Registered as a geographical indication in 2009–10.
The gold border itself, historically flattened silver-gilt wire wound on a silk core. Most of what is sold now is a copper or polyester substitute, and the price gap between the two is the single largest quality question in a Kerala cloth shop.
Coconut fibre spun into yarn and woven into matting on hand and power looms across the Alappuzha belt. Registered as Alleppey Coir in 2007–08.
