- Chennai Central (MAS) — The main terminus for services north and west, in a Gothic red building of 1873.
- Chennai Egmore (MS) — The terminus for the southern Tamil country, and the station for the museum quarter.
- Chengalpattu Junction (CGL) — The junction for the shore and the Kanchipuram line.
- Kanchipuram (CJ) — On a branch line; most visitors come by bus or car from Chennai in about two hours.
- Katpadi Junction (KPD) — The Palar basin junction, for Vellore and the road inland to the plateau.
- Puducherry (PDY) — A branch terminus off the main line at Villupuram, with limited services.

Chennai has three suburban rail lines, an elevated MRTS along the coast, a metro on two corridors and an enormous bus network; share autos work the main roads. Mamallapuram is an hour and a half from Chennai by the coast road and Puducherry three; both are best done by road. Puducherry itself is a bicycle and scooter town and the old quarters are walkable end to end.
