Sindhudurg Fortविरासतयूनेस्कोSindhudurg

Built from 1664 on the rocky islet of Kurte off Malvan, on Shivaji's own choice of site, with a curtain wall that follows the rock rather than any plan and freshwater wells inside a sea fort. It holds impressions said to be of Shivaji's hand and foot set in lime, and a small temple to him raised by his son — one of the very few places where he is worshipped as a deity rather than commemorated. Inscribed by UNESCO in 2025 within the Maratha Military Landscapes of India.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February. कैसे पहुँचें: Ferry from Malvan jetty, weather permitting; no boats in the monsoon.

Vijaydurg Fortविरासतयूनेस्कोSindhudurg

A promontory fort with three lines of wall above the Vaghotan creek, and the base from which Kanhoji Angre's fleet operated. A submerged wall lies offshore, into which attacking ships are said to have been steered. Also inscribed by UNESCO in 2025 as a component of the Maratha Military Landscapes.

The Konkan petroglyphs (katal shilpa)विरासतRatnagiri and Sindhudurg

Thousands of figures — elephants, rhinoceros, sharks, human forms, geometric designs, some tens of metres across — carved into the bare laterite plateaus around Ratnagiri, Rajapur and Lanja, mostly documented only in the last fifteen years by local researchers walking the sada. The animals depicted include species that have not lived on this coast in historical times, which is the argument for a very early date. On India's UNESCO tentative list; sites at Ukshi, Barsu and Kasheli are the accessible ones.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February.

Amboliपहाड़Sindhudurg

A ghat-crest village at around 700 metres receiving among the highest rainfall in Maharashtra, and one of the richest amphibian and reptile localities in the Western Ghats — several species were described from here and are known from almost nowhere else. In the monsoon it is a wall of water; in February it is dry scrub, and visitors who arrive then are disappointed for structural reasons.

सबसे अच्छा समय: July–September for the ghat itself; October–February for wildlife walks.

Malvan and the Malvan Marine Sanctuaryसमुद्र तटSindhudurg

The fishing town below Sindhudurg fort, with a marine sanctuary notified in the 1980s around the rocky reefs offshore. Snorkelling and diving run out of Tarkarli and Malvan through the fair-weather season, and the reef here is one of very few in Maharashtra.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–May.

Tarkarliसमुद्र तटSindhudurg

White sand between the sea and the Karli backwater, with a sandbar where the two meet. The houseboats and homestays here are the model that the district's tourism policy has been built on since the 1990s.

Ganpatipuleतीर्थRatnagiri

A monolithic Ganesh image on the beach, unusually facing west, with the pradakshina path running around the hill behind it rather than around the shrine. One of the busiest pilgrim beaches on the coast, and busiest at Ganesh Chaturthi and Magh.

Kunkeshwarतीर्थSindhudurg

A stone Shiva temple standing at the edge of the sand at Devgad, of considerable antiquity and rebuilt more than once. Its Mahashivratri yatra fills the beach, and the sea reaches the compound wall at high tide in the monsoon.

Marleshwarतीर्थRatnagiri

A cave shrine reached by a stepped climb beside the Dhareshwar waterfall near Sangameshwar, occupied by resident snakes that are not removed and are treated as part of the sanctity. Its yatra falls at Makar Sankranti and is described as the deity's marriage.

Thibaw Palace, RatnagiriविरासतRatnagiri

The house built for Thibaw, the last king of Burma, who was deported here after the annexation of upper Burma in 1885 and lived out his life in Ratnagiri, dying in 1916. A colonial administrative decision left a Burmese royal household in a Konkan district town for three decades, and the building is now a museum.

Ratnadurg Fort and Ratnagiri townविरासतRatnagiri

A horseshoe-shaped fort on a headland above the town with a lighthouse and a Bhagawati temple inside it. Ratnagiri town also holds Tilak's birthplace, kept as a memorial.

Jaigad and HarnaiविरासतRatnagiri

Two working fishing harbours with forts above them. Harnai's evening beach auction, where the day's catch is sold on the sand as the boats come in, is the most direct fish market on this coast; Suvarnadurg lies just offshore and is itself part of the 2025 UNESCO serial inscription.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–May, late afternoon.

Velasप्रकृतिRatnagiri

A village at the Bankot creek mouth where a community-run programme protects olive ridley nests and releases hatchlings between roughly February and April. The hatch is unpredictable to the day, which is the honest thing to say about the festival built around it.

सबसे अच्छा समय: February–April.

SawantwadiविरासतSindhudurg

The old capital of the Sawant Bhonsle state at the foot of the Amboli ghat, with a lake, a palace whose Durbar Hall houses a working lacquerware and ganjifa workshop, and the craft street around it.

PinguliविरासतSindhudurg

A village near Kudal where Thakar families keep Chitrakathi painting, string puppetry and shadow puppetry, with a small family-run museum and performance space. It is the only place in the region where all three narrative forms can still be seen performed.

Redi Ganesh and Redi beachतीर्थSindhudurg

A large Ganesh image uncovered in the 1970s during iron-ore mining near Redi, now a busy shrine, beside one of the least developed beaches on the coast and the mouth of the Terekhol.

Dapoli, Murud and Anjarleसमुद्र तटRatnagiri

The northern beach cluster, with the Kadyavarcha Ganpati temple on the cliff at Anjarle and the agricultural university at Dapoli that bred much of the region's planting material.

Chiplun and Parshuramतीर्थRatnagiri

The Vashishti valley town on the highway, with the hilltop Parshuram temple above it — the coast's origin myth in built form, since the whole Konkan is traditionally described as land Parshuram reclaimed from the sea.
