Coarse checked cotton in red, black and green, tied at the shoulder, the working cloth of cultivator and fishing households on both sides of the Goa line before mill prints replaced it.

Dhotar, sadra and topiMen

A short dhoti wrapped for wading, a collarless shirt and the black or white Gandhi topi; a folded cloth on the shoulder that serves as towel, headpad and filter. Fishing crews work in shorts and a shirt and keep the dhoti for the shore.

Tall crowns and heavy ornament over stylised robes, with painted faces for the human roles and carved wooden masks for Ganapati, Narasimha and the demon Sankasur. Make-up is applied in the open, in front of the audience, which is treated as part of the performance rather than as preparation for it.

A small surviving cotton-weaving activity around Sawantwadi and Kudal, producing checked lugade and towelling for local use. It is minor, and honesty requires saying so — this is not a weaving region and never developed a court textile.

Ghongdi and the ghat woollensSahyadri slope

Coarse black blankets woven by Dhangar pastoralists who bring flocks down the ghat in the dry months. They belong to the plateau economy above and arrive here with the sheep.
