It commemorates the blood-brotherhood pact between Lepcha and Bhutia ancestors and is the one festival that is specific to this region and to nowhere else. |
| Bumchu at Tashiding | Fourteenth and fifteenth day of the first Tibetan month, February–March | The sealed water vase is opened before dawn, three cups are distributed to the congregation, the level is read for the year, and the vase is refilled from the Rathong and sealed for another twelve months. |
| Saga Dawa | Full moon of the fourth Tibetan month, May–June | The Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing marked on one day. Monks and laypeople carry the volumes of the Kangyur in procession through Gangtok, and butter lamps are lit at every monastery. |
| Losar and Sonam Lhosar | February–March; Sonam Lhosar usually in January–February | Tibetan and Bhutia new year, and the Tamang new year that precedes it. Khapse stacked in the house, cham at the monasteries, and household debts settled before the year turns. |
| Tendong Lho Rum Faat | August | A Lepcha observance of thanks to Tendong hill, which in the narrative rose above a flood and saved the people. Prayers are offered on the hill itself, and the festival has become the principal public assertion of Lepcha identity in the calendar. |
| Dasain and Tihar | October–November | The two great Nepali-speaking festivals — Dasain with its tika, jamara and swings, Tihar with lamps, the worship of crow, dog, cow and brother on successive days, and Deusi–Bhailo parties moving house to house through the night singing for a share of sel roti and coin. |
