नृत्य

Chamअनुष्ठान

Masked liturgical dance performed in the monastery courtyard to a score of long horns, shawms, cymbals and drums, in which monks embody protector deities and the year's accumulated obstruction is destroyed in the final sequence. It is a rite, not a performance — the dancer is under vow, the steps are prescribed in manuals, and the audience is a congregation. Rumtek and Pemayangtse hold the best-known cycles.

कौन करता है: Ordained monks of the Nyingma and Kagyu monasteries. मौका: Monastic calendar — Losoong, Losar and monastery anniversaries

Pangtoed Chhamअनुष्ठान

A warrior dance performed in battle dress at the festival that consecrates Kanchenjunga as guardian of the land, attributed to the third Chogyal, Chakdor Namgyal. The mountain deity is danced by a masked figure in red; the festival itself commemorates the blood-brotherhood pact between the Lepcha bongthing Thekong Tek and the Bhutia ancestor Khye Bumsa, which is why it is read as the region's founding covenant.

कौन करता है: Monks and lay dancers at Pang Lhabsol. मौका: Pang Lhabsol, in the seventh Tibetan month

Singhi Chhamलोक

The snow lion dance, also credited to Chakdor Namgyal. The white lion with its blue mane is the animal form of Kanchenjunga, whose five peaks are read as the lion's shape — the dance is an impersonation of the mountain, not of a beast.

कौन करता है: Bhutia dancers, two men to a costume. मौका: Losoong and Pang Lhabsol

Maruniलोक

One of the oldest Nepali folk dances, danced by women in full gunyu-cholo and heavy jewellery to a nine-piece naumati baja ensemble, with a masked clown figure who breaks the formality. Historically the female roles were danced by men.

कौन करता है: Nepali-speaking communities. मौका: Tihar, weddings

Tamang Seloलोक

Song and dance driven by the damphu — a single-headed hand frame drum whose off-beat is the entire rhythmic identity of the form. Selo moved from village courtyard to cassette and radio faster than any other genre here.

कौन करता है: Tamang communities. मौका: Social gatherings, Sonam Lhosar

Chyabrung (Ke lang)लोक

A two-headed drum slung at the waist and struck with hand and stick while the drummer dances, the steps imitating animals and agricultural actions. The drummer leads; the line follows the drum, not a singer.

कौन करता है: Limbu. मौका: Weddings, harvest, Chasok Tangnam

Dhan nach (Ya:lang)लोक

A slow interlocked-arm line dance performed round a heap of paddy, sung to palam verses exchanged between the men's and women's halves of the line. It is a courting institution as much as a dance.

कौन करता है: Limbu, in mixed lines. मौका: Harvest and courtship gatherings

Chu Faat and Zo-Mal-Lokजनजातीय

Chu Faat honours Kanchenjunga and the four attendant peaks with offerings of butter lamps and ferns; Zo-Mal-Lok mimes the cycle of sowing, weeding and reaping. Both are danced to a small ensemble and were documented late, which is why the repertoire is thin compared with the songs.

कौन करता है: Lepcha. मौका: Chu Faat in Bhadra; Zo-Mal-Lok at harvest

Sakela siliजनजातीय

A circle dance around a ritual ground, led by a mangpa, in which each sili is a fixed movement sequence imitating a bird, an animal or a farming action. The number of silis a community keeps is a measure of how much of its liturgy survives.

कौन करता है: Rai (Kirat) communities. मौका: Sakewa Ubhauli in spring and Udhauli in autumn

संगीत

Nepali lok geet and the Darjeeling recording tradition

Darjeeling and Kalimpong were, through the twentieth century, the printing and recording centre for Nepali-language song and literature outside Nepal. The Nepali Sahitya Sammelan, founded at Darjeeling in 1924, standardised much of the written language, and the ridge produced a modern song repertoire — adhunik geet — that travelled back across the range.

Damphu and naumati baja

Two ensembles define public sound here — the Tamang damphu frame drum, played solo with the voice, and the nine-instrument naumati baja of shawm, natural trumpet, kettledrums and cymbals played by hereditary musician families at weddings and processions.

Monastic ritual music

The dungchen long horn, gyaling shawm, rolmo cymbals and nga drum, played not as melody but as a timed liturgical structure that cues the cham dancers. Pitch is fixed by instrument, not by scale.

Mundhum recitation

The Limbu and Rai oral scripture, chanted by a phedangma, samba or mangpa in an archaic register that ordinary speakers cannot fully follow. It carries genealogy, origin narrative and ritual procedure, and it is recited rather than sung.

Lepcha ritual chant

The invocations of the mun (usually a woman) and the bongthing (usually a man), addressed to the peaks, rivers and the ancestral pair said to have been made from the snows of Kanchenjunga. The chants are the oldest layer of verbal art in the region and the least recorded.

रंगमंच

Cham as enacted doctrine

Between the deity sequences of a cham cycle, the atsara — an unmasked or comically masked figure — moves through the courtyard mocking the audience and handling the crowd. The comic interlude is built into the liturgy, and it is what makes a day-long rite watchable for a lay congregation.

Modern Nepali stage

A one-act and full-length Nepali theatre grew around the Darjeeling schools, literary societies and radio from the mid-twentieth century, staging social realist material about plantation life, migration and land. It is the region's most direct art form and the least exported.

शिल्प

Darjeeling orthodox tea manufacture जीआई पंजीकृत Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong, Mirik

The first product registered as a geographical indication in India, in 2004–05, defined by a bounded set of gardens on this ridge. Only tea grown and processed within that area may carry the name.

सामग्री: Camellia sinensis var. sinensis — the China-type bush. तकनीक: Withering, hand or light-roller rolling, controlled oxidation, firing and grading, done flush by flush rather than continuously. The China bush was planted because the Assam type failed at this altitude, and the slow growth on cold nights is what concentrates the aromatics.

Sikkim large cardamom, bhatti-cured जीआई पंजीकृत Sikkim, and the Kalimpong and Darjeeling slopes

Registered as a geographical indication in 2015. Sikkim is among the largest producers of large cardamom in the world, and the crop — not tea — is the cash backbone of most Sikkimese hill households.

सामग्री: Amomum subulatum, grown in shade under alder. तकनीक: Harvested in autumn and dried over a direct wood fire in a bhatti shed, which is where the smoke note comes from. The crop is grown under N-fixing alder, so the plantation improves the soil rather than exhausting it.

Thangka painting Gangtok, Rumtek, Kalimpong

Taught at the monasteries and at the state cottage industries institute. A painter is judged on adherence to the grid, not on invention, which is why the tradition is legible across five centuries.

सामग्री: Cotton canvas sized with chalk and glue, mineral and vegetable pigment, gold. तकनीक: The canvas is stretched and burnished, the iconography set out on a measured grid because proportions are prescribed, then painted in flat mineral colour and finished with gold outline. Mounting in brocade is a separate trade.

Lepcha bamboo and cane work जीआई योग्य Dzongu and the Teesta valley

A complete household technology in one material. The forms are still made in Dzongu, but the market for them collapsed with plastic and the knowledge now sits with a small number of older makers.

सामग्री: Bamboo, cane, nettle fibre. तकनीक: Split-and-plait construction with no nails and no glue, producing mats, baskets, fish traps, milk containers and the sumok-thyaktuk rain hat of woven bamboo lined with leaf.

Choktse carving जीआई योग्य Gangtok and Kalimpong

The single piece of furniture in a traditional Bhutia room — it folds flat, which matters in a house that may be reached only on foot.

सामग्री: Walnut, teak and local hardwood. तकनीक: A low folding table joined without screws, carved in relief with the eight auspicious symbols, dragons or lotus, then painted in mineral colour.

Cham mask carving Monastic workshops across the region

Masks are consecrated before use and stored in the monastery rather than sold, so the craft has no real retail market and survives entirely inside the institutions that need it.

सामग्री: Wood, papier-mâché, cloth and mineral pigment. तकनीक: Carved or layered over a clay form, then gessoed and painted; the mask must be light enough to be danced in for hours and shaped so the dancer can see through the mouth or nostrils.

Handmade paper Sikkim

The paper of Buddhist manuscript tradition, made from a shrub that regenerates from the cut stump, so the raw material is renewable by design. Small units still produce it for monasteries and for the craft market.

सामग्री: Bast fibre from Daphne and Edgeworthia shrub bark. तकनीक: Bark is cooked with ash alkali, beaten to a pulp and lifted on a floating frame mould set in a stream, then dried on the frame in the sun.

Sikkimese and Tibetan carpet weaving Gangtok

Established as an organised craft through the state cottage industries institute in Gangtok and by workshops set up with Tibetan refugee weavers around Darjeeling and Kalimpong after 1959.

सामग्री: Highland sheep wool. तकनीक: Knotted on a vertical loom over a rod, so each row of knots is cut free at once — the technique that gives the pile its characteristic density and the loom its speed.
