Ponungअनुष्ठान
A slow linked-arm circle danced by young women around a miri — the ritual specialist — who stands at the centre holding a ceremonial sword and sings the lines the dancers answer. The dance is the delivery mechanism for the text: the miri narrates and the circle carries the refrain, and a full Ponung can run through the night.
कौन करता है: Unmarried women, led by a male ritual singer. मौका: Solung
Tapuयुद्धकला
The war dance, performed with dao and shield in short violent bursts that re-enact an engagement. It is danced at Aran, the hunting festival in early March, and its footwork is closer to drill than to display.
कौन करता है: Men. मौका: Aran
Delongलोक
A men's dance performed in the community hall at Etor in May, the festival that marks the fencing of fields and the welfare of cattle and mithun.
कौन करता है: Men. मौका: Etor
Popirलोक
The Galo circle dance of Mopin, danced in white ceremonial dress after participants have smeared each other with ette, a wet rice-flour paste. The whiteness is the point — rice powder on face and cloth is a public statement about the crop the festival is for.
कौन करता है: Galo women. मौका: Mopin
संगीत
Abang
The Adi ceremonial chant — long narrative recitation of origin, migration and genealogy, delivered by a miri in an archaic register that ordinary speakers do not fully command. It functions as scripture in a tradition that had no writing, and its accuracy was checked in public by other elders.
Nitom
The everyday song category — work songs, courting songs, laments. Its downstream relative, the Mising oi nitom of the Assam floodplain, is the best-recorded Tani song genre and is sung to the same melodic logic in a language a Siang speaker can partly follow.
Ja-jin-ja
A call-and-response entertainment song of the Adi, sung at gatherings and at the close of festivals, with a leader improvising lines against a fixed responding phrase.
रंगमंच
Kebang oratory
The nearest thing to a staged form here is a council in session. Argument before the kebang is conducted in a formal, proverb-heavy speech register, and skill at it is a recognised accomplishment — the elders who lead proceedings are named for their command of precedent and phrasing, not for rank.
Festival ground enactment
At Solung and Mopin, sequences of sacrifice, procession and dance are performed in a fixed order that functions as a public re-telling of the agricultural year. There is no separate theatre tradition because the festival is doing that work.
शिल्प
Cane suspension bridges जीआई योग्य Across the Siang and Siyom
Built and rebuilt by village labour, and inspected and re-lashed on a cycle measured in a year or two because cane rots. The knowledge is procedural and held collectively rather than by specialists, which makes it exactly the kind of craft that disappears quietly once a steel bridge goes in upstream. Several survive on the Siang and Siyom and are still used.
सामग्री: Split cane, bamboo, fibre lashing. तकनीक: Cables of twisted cane are anchored to living trees or driven posts on each bank, a walking element of bamboo is slung beneath, and cane hoops are lashed at intervals so the whole structure forms a tapering tube the walker moves through. No metal, no nails, no fixings of any kind.
Loin-loom weaving जीआई पंजीकृत East Siang, West Siang, Siang, Lepa Rada
Adi Textile and Galo Textile hold separate geographical indications granted in January 2024. Weaving is women's work, done at home, and a ceremonial gale still takes weeks.
सामग्री: Cotton, wool, forest-plant dyes. तकनीक: Backstrap weaving with discontinuous supplementary weft, the pattern counted in by hand thread by thread rather than set by a mechanism.
Cane and bamboo basketry जीआई योग्य Across the belt
The container technology of an economy with no pottery tradition worth speaking of and no pack animal. A household's baskets are graded by weave density: coarse for firewood, close for grain, very close for liquid work.
सामग्री: Split cane, bamboo. तकनीक: Coiled and plaited construction, sized to the load — head-strap carrying baskets, storage baskets lined with leaf, fish traps, and the conical funnel used to filter apong through ash.
Dao forging जीआई पंजीकृत Across the belt
The dao is tool, weapon and dress item at once, and it appears in every ceremonial photograph for that reason. The Arunachal dao was granted a geographical indication in January 2024.
सामग्री: Iron. तकनीक: Forged and ground to a heavy single-bevel blade, hafted in wood and sheathed in cane or wood.
Apong brewing जीआई पंजीकृत Across the belt
A domestic craft with a registered name — Adi Apong and Marua Apo both received geographical indications in January 2024. The starter cake, not the grain, is what a family actually owns.
सामग्री: Rice, millet, herb starter cake, rice-husk ash. तकनीक: Solid-state fermentation with a household starter culture, then either drawn plain or filtered through ash.
Wood and bamboo house building Across the belt
The moshup, the village dormitory and kebang hall, is the largest structure a village builds, and its hearth is where disputes are heard. Building it is a collective obligation rather than a commission.
सामग्री: Bamboo, cane, timber, thatch. तकनीक: Raised floors on posts, lashed frames, split-bamboo walling and a long open hearth set into the floor with the drying rack above it.
