नृत्य

Garbaलोक

A circular dance around a garbo — a perforated earthen pot with a lamp burning inside it. The perforations are the whole idea: the pot stands for the body and the lamp for what is inside it, and the light is visible only through the holes. Dancers move anticlockwise around it with a clap on the beat, and the tempo climbs across the night. The stadium-scale sponsored garba of recent decades is a commercial descendant of a form that is still danced in village squares with a single drum.

कौन करता है: Women, and now everyone. मौका: Navratri

Raas and dandiya raasलोक

Danced with a pair of short sticks struck against a partner's on the count, in two counter-rotating circles so partners change continuously. It is attached to the Krishna cycle and to Dwarka, and it is structurally a mock combat rather than a courtship dance.

कौन करता है: Men and women in pairs. मौका: Navratri, Janmashtami

Hudoलोक

Danced in pairs with the palms struck hard against the partner's palms on the beat, the whole body dropping into each clap. It is fast, physically punishing and performed most visibly at the Tarnetar fair.

कौन करता है: Bharwad men and women. मौका: Tarnetar and other fairs

Tippaniलोक

Long wooden staves brought down rhythmically on the ground in unison. It began as the labour of compacting lime floors and terraces, where the beat kept a line of women striking together, and became a dance when the work method disappeared.

कौन करता है: Koli women of the Chorwad coast. मौका: Work, and now performance

Mer raasलोक

A heavier, faster men's raas performed with large drums and full swings of the arm, distinct from the lighter Navratri dandiya in tempo and in the size of the circle.

कौन करता है: Mer men of the Porbandar and Barda country. मौका: Festivals

Sidi Dhamalअनुष्ठान

Drumming and dance carried by a community of African descent settled in the Gir country for centuries, using the mugarman drum and coconut rattles, with a coconut broken on the head at the climax. It is devotional in origin and is now also performed for visitors, which has changed it.

कौन करता है: Sidi households at Jambur and around Junagadh. मौका: The urs of Bava Gor and other observances

संगीत

Duha and chhand

Aphoristic couplets in the Charani bardic register, sung unaccompanied or over a single drone, each complete in itself. A duha is meant to land as a judgement rather than to advance a story, and the metre is memorised rather than written.

Dayro

A night-long session in which a single performer alternates duha, bhajan, story and commentary before a seated audience, taking questions and calls from the floor. It is the peninsula's principal live cultural form, still held in villages and now also broadcast; the performer's authority comes from repertoire and from lineage.

Bhajan and santvani

The Ravi-Bhan devotional lineage produced a large Saurashtra bhajan corpus — Bhoja Bhagat's chabkha or whip-verses, which are deliberately abrasive; Gangasati's fifty-two bhajans addressed to her disciple Panbai; and Dasi Jivan's songs from Ghoghavadar. These are sung at all-night bhajan gatherings rather than in temples.

Jodiya pava

Twin bamboo flutes played simultaneously by one Maldhari player, one holding a drone and one the melody, sustained with circular breathing so the sound never stops. It is a herding instrument, played to move and settle animals before it was played to an audience.

Ravanhattho

A bowed spike fiddle with a coconut body, horsehair strings and jingles on the bow, played by itinerant Nath and Bhopa performers to accompany narrative song.

रंगमंच

Bhavai

Gujarati folk theatre performed in the open on a bare earth stage, announced by the bhungal, a long straight copper trumpet. Its origin is credited to Asaita Thakar in North Gujarat rather than to this region, but the touring Bhavai troupes worked the Saurashtra fair circuit for centuries and its veshas are part of the peninsula's repertoire.

Dayro as performance

The dayro sits between music and theatre — a soloist doing narration, mimicry, satire and devotional song in a single sitting, and shaping the evening by reading the audience.

शिल्प

Bandhani जीआई पंजीकृत Jamnagar, Rajkot, Morbi

Registered as Jamnagari Bandhani in 2016. Counting the number of tied points is how quality is judged, and a fine wedding gharchola can carry tens of thousands.

सामग्री: Cotton, silk, gaji silk. तकनीक: The cloth is folded, and thousands of individual points are lifted and bound with thread before dyeing. Tiers grow a long thumbnail to pinch up each point, and the design is transferred by pricking a stencil and pouncing it with washable colour.

Rajkot Patola जीआई पंजीकृत Rajkot

Registered in 2018. The double-ikat patola of Patan, in North Gujarat, is a separate registration and a separate craft; conflating the two is the most common error made about Gujarati silk.

सामग्री: Mulberry silk. तकनीक: Single-ikat — the weft alone is tied and dyed to the design before weaving.

Tangaliya weaving जीआई पंजीकृत Surendranagar

A Dangasia craft registered in 2009, historically made as the woollen ramraj skirt worn by Bharwad women and now surviving mainly through cooperative and design intervention.

सामग्री: Sheep wool, cotton, acrylic. तकनीक: Supplementary weft twisted around warp threads during weaving to raise a dot in the cloth itself.

Rabari, Ahir and Mahajan embroidery जीआई योग्य Across the peninsula

Documented in detail and commercially significant, but unregistered — the registered Kutch Embroidery geographical indication covers the neighbouring region's related styles.

सामग्री: Cotton, silk floss, mirror. तकनीक: Chain stitch worked with a needle or an ari hook, with mirrors held down by a ring of buttonhole stitch. Motif and mirror size differ by community and can be read as an identifier.

Mochi bharat जीआई योग्य Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Rajkot

Fine hook embroidery made by Mochi craftsmen for Kathi and Rajput households — the courtly end of the peninsula's embroidery, and now practised by very few.

सामग्री: Silk floss on satin and velvet. तकनीक: Ari-hook chain stitch worked from a stretched frame, giving a continuous unbroken line.

Moti bharat जीआई योग्य Across the peninsula

Beadwork torans hung over doorways, chaklas and animal covers, made in households rather than workshops and given rather than sold.

सामग्री: Glass beads on thread. तकनीक: Beads strung and interlocked without a backing cloth, building a self-supporting mesh.

Sihor metalware जीआई योग्य Bhavnagar (Sihor)

A metalworking town at the foot of the Gohilwad hills that supplied vessels across the peninsula, and one of the few places where hand-tinning is still done to order.

सामग्री: Brass and copper. तकनीक: Beating, spinning and tinning of sheet metal into storage and cooking vessels.

Morbi ceramics Morbi

A twentieth-century industrial cluster that grew out of a local clock and tile-making tradition and is now among the largest ceramic manufacturing concentrations in the world. It belongs here as an example of a craft economy that industrialised rather than died.

सामग्री: Clay body, glaze, vitrified tile. तकनीक: Pressed and fired wall and floor tile, sanitaryware and vitrified slabs at industrial scale.
