Rarh · Middle & Lower Gangetic Plain

भूभाग और पारिस्थितिक अंचल

Tropical wet and dry, and noticeably harsher than the delta an hour to the east. Summer maxima at Bankura, Asansol and Purulia regularly pass 43 °C and are among the highest recorded anywhere in Bengal; the monsoon delivers most of the year's 1,200–1,400 mm between mid-June and September. Because laterite sheds water instead of storing it, the same district can flood in August and run out of drinking water in April — which is why the landscape is covered in excavated tanks and why every dam on these rivers was politically urgent.

SummerApril–June26–44 °CHot, dry and dusty, with the kalbaisakhi squalls arriving from the west in the evenings. The kitchen turns to panta bhat, posto and thin fish jhol.
Monsoonmid-June–September25–34 °CAman paddy transplanted into the bahal, the Damodar and Ajay in spate, and the khoai gullies cutting deeper every year.
Post-monsoonOctober22–32 °CDurga Puja, including the old zamindari and Malla-court pujas that predate the community version.

घूमने का सबसे अच्छा समयNovember to February. Mid-January for the Kenduli mela and Tusu Parab, late December for Poush Mela at Santiniketan, and March for the palash bloom and Basanta Utsav. Avoid late April and May, when the laterite country is genuinely punishing.
