Purulia Chhauयुद्धकला
A masked dance-drama with no speech and no song from the dancers, driven entirely by the dhamsa and dhol and by the shehnai. Episodes are drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas, and the vocabulary is built out of leaps, spins and combat postures — the mask covers the face, so expression has to be produced by the whole body. Chhau was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, in an entry covering all three of its regional styles.
कौन करता है: Hereditary performers, largely from Kurmi and other communities of the Baghmundi tract. मौका: Chaitra Parba, in April
Raibensheयुद्धकला
A vigorous stick-and-staff dance performed to the dhak, descended from the drill of village guards and retainers. Birbhum and the Bardhaman side hold the surviving tradition, and it is danced in lines with lowered stances and long lunges.
कौन करता है: Men. मौका: Fairs, processions and Gajan
Nachni and Jhumurलोक
A woman dances and sings Jhumur verse to the accompaniment of her rasik, who composes and sings with her. The form is virtuosic and the social position of the nachni has historically been precarious, with performers excluded from ordinary village rites — a fact the tradition's own songs address directly.
कौन करता है: A woman dancer with her rasik singer-patron, Purulia and the Manbhum tract. मौका: Fairs, weddings and festival nights
Santali danceजनजातीय
Danced in a long linked line, women in front, men behind with tamak and tumdak drums and the flute, moving sideways in a slow repeating step for hours at the akhra, the village dancing ground. It is participatory rather than presentational — there is no audience.
कौन करता है: Whole villages, in line. मौका: Baha in spring and Sohrai after the harvest
Bhadu and Tusu processionsअनुष्ठान
Decorated frames and small idols are carried in procession to the river and immersed, with songs composed fresh each year. Tusu is the larger of the two and belongs to the Manbhum tract on both sides of the state boundary.
कौन करता है: Unmarried girls and young women. मौका: Bhadra, and Makar Sankranti in mid-January
संगीत
Baul
A tradition of wandering singer-practitioners whose songs carry a body-centred esoteric teaching — the divine sought inside the human body rather than in a temple — sung to the ektara, dubki, khamak and ghungur. Bauls belong to no orthodoxy and take initiates from Hindu and Muslim households alike. The Baul tradition was inscribed by UNESCO on its intangible heritage list, and its principal gathering in this region is the Kenduli mela on the Ajay.
Bishnupur gharana
The only Hindustani vocal gharana of Bengal, dhrupad-based and traced to Ramshankar Bhattacharya, a disciple of the Senia dhrupad singer Bahadur Khan, who was taken into the Malla court at Bishnupur. The chronology is disputed by historians, but the lineage and its distinctive raga treatment are not. It also produced a school of sitar and surbahar playing.
Jhumur
The sung verse form of the Manbhum tract — short, rhythmically driving, often erotic, and composed by named poets whose texts are known and argued over. It travels with the Nachni tradition and is sung independently at fairs.
Padavali kirtan, Manoharshahi style
Bengali devotional narrative singing in which a Krishna episode is elaborated over hours with interpolated commentary. The Manoharshahi gharana takes its name from a pargana on this side of the Bhagirathi and is one of the principal styles of the form, distinguished by its slow, ornamented treatment.
Tusu and Bhadu songs
Seasonal song cycles composed anew each year by the women who sing them, addressed to a goddess figure who is treated as a daughter of the household. The songs carry a great deal of ordinary social commentary, which is why folklorists read them as a running record of the tract.
रंगमंच
Chhau
Performed all night at Chaitra Parba on open ground, with a troupe of masked dancers, a drum line and a narrator-singer, on episodes the audience already knows. There is no stage and no dialogue.
Alkap
A night-long folk theatre of the Birbhum, Murshidabad and Bardhaman borderland, run by a troupe leader called a sarkar with boy performers in female roles, alternating songs, comic sketches and topical satire. It is one of the few Bengali folk forms that has kept its improvised political commentary intact.
Bolan
Birbhum's Gajan-season performance — processional troupes moving between villages at the end of Chaitra with songs, masks and short dramatic pieces, tied to the Shiva Gajan and Charak observances.
Jatra
Bengal's touring open-stage theatre, played to standing crowds through the winter mela season, with declamatory delivery and live music. The Rarh's melas are a substantial part of its circuit.
शिल्प
Bankura Panchmura terracotta जीआई पंजीकृत Bankura (Panchmura)
The stylised long-necked horse from Panchmura village is the best-known terracotta object in India and serves as the emblem of the national crafts council. It began as a votive offering left at village shrines, in quantity, and became a decorative object much later.
सामग्री: Local river clay. तकनीक: Thrown, moulded and hand-assembled in parts, then fired in an open kiln. The Bankura horse is built from separately made cylinders joined at the shoulder, which is why it has the shape it has — the geometry is a consequence of the assembly, not a style choice.
Bengal Dokra जीआई पंजीकृत Bankura (Bikna) and Purba Bardhaman (Dariapur)
Cast by families of the Malhar community in a handful of villages, in a technique with a continuous history running back to the Bronze Age. The characteristic thread-wound surface is a by-product of the method rather than an applied decoration.
सामग्री: Brass and bell metal, beeswax, clay, rice husk. तकनीक: Lost-wax casting. A clay core is wrapped in fine wax threads, coated in successive clay layers, heated so the wax runs out, and filled with molten metal. The mould has to be broken to release the casting, so every piece is a single unrepeatable object and the wax threads remain visible on the surface.
Chhau masks of Charida जीआई पंजीकृत Purulia (Baghmundi)
A single village street of mask-making households supplying the Chhau troupes of the whole tract. The Purulia Chau mask carries a registered geographical indication, and the trade has partially converted to decorative wall masks for buyers who will never dance in one.
सामग्री: Paper pulp, clay, cloth, mud and paint. तकनीक: Layers of paper and cloth pasted over a clay form, dried, separated, then finished with a clay-and-cloth surface, painted, and given eyes, headdress and ornaments. Weight matters — the mask has to be danced in for hours.
Baluchari and Swarnachari weaving जीआई पंजीकृत Bankura (Bishnupur)
The narrative saree of Bengal, rebuilt at Bishnupur after the original Murshidabad trade collapsed. Weavers' earnings remain low relative to retail prices, which is the standard complaint of every GI handloom in India.
सामग्री: Mulberry silk, zari. तकनीक: Jacquard-assisted supplementary weft on a handloom, with the anchal's figurative panel punched onto cards before weaving begins. A single saree takes several days on the loom.
Santiniketan leather जीआई पंजीकृत Birbhum
A craft invented in the twentieth century as part of Visva-Bharati's rural reconstruction programme, then built into a cooperative industry around Sriniketan. It is unusual among Indian crafts in having a documented founding date and a documented design source.
सामग्री: Vegetable-tanned leather, batik dye. तकनीक: Hand-tooled, batik-dyed and stitched, with motifs derived from the Kala Bhavana design vocabulary.
Dashavatar taas जीआई योग्य Bankura (Bishnupur)
A circular hand-painted playing-card pack made in Bishnupur for a game with its own rules, and now sustained by a very small number of families. It survives as an object more than as a game.
सामग्री: Cloth, tamarind-seed paste and natural pigment. तकनीक: Round discs built up from layers of cloth and paste, hand-painted in ten suits corresponding to the ten avatars, and burnished.
Terracotta temple brickwork Bankura, Birbhum, Bardhaman, Hooghly
Not a marketable craft but a building tradition, and the region's largest artistic achievement. It exists because the laterite shelf has no stone worth quarrying, so the only structural and decorative material available was clay.
सामग्री: Fired brick and moulded terracotta plaque. तकनीक: Panels are pressed from carved wooden moulds, fired, and set into the brick face in registers, with the curved chala cornice built up in cut and rubbed brick.
Kantha stitch जीआई पंजीकृत Birbhum
A domestic craft — quilts made from worn sarees for a household's own use — that has become a commercial embroidery industry around Bolpur, worked on new silk for the market.
सामग्री: Cotton and silk, thread drawn from old cloth. तकनीक: Running stitch worked freehand across layered cloth, quilting and drawing at the same time.
