Harmandir Sahib (Darbar Sahib), Amritsarतीर्थAmritsar

The central shrine of Sikhism, standing in the middle of a tank at the lowest point of its complex and entered by descending steps — a deliberate inversion of the usual raised temple, and open on all four sides. The Adi Granth was installed here in 1604; the gilding dates from the early nineteenth century under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Its langar serves tens of thousands of meals every day, more on holidays, in a continuously running kitchen staffed largely by volunteers. Facing it stands the Akal Takht, established in 1606 as the seat of temporal authority in the tradition.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March; before dawn for the opening.

Jallianwala BaghविरासतAmritsar

A walled garden beside the Harmandir Sahib complex where, on 13 April 1919, troops under British command fired on an enclosed crowd assembled on Vaisakhi. The narrow entrance lane and the well into which people jumped are both preserved, and bullet marks are still visible in the brickwork.

Akal Takht and the Amritsar walled cityविरासतAmritsar

The old city was founded in 1577 by the fourth Guru around the tank, laid out with trade katras and bazaars that still run by commodity — cloth in one lane, dried fruit in another, jutti in a third. The bazaars are as much the city's heritage as its monuments.

Anandpur Sahib and Virasat-e-Khalsaतीर्थRupnagar

The town at the Shivalik foot founded by the ninth Guru, where the Khalsa was inaugurated on Vaisakhi in 1699. Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib stands at its centre, and the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum, opened in 2011 and designed by Moshe Safdie, is built into the ridge above it in sweeping concrete and steel forms that answer the surrounding hills.

सबसे अच्छा समय: February–March, for Hola Mohalla.

Fatehgarh Sahibतीर्थFatehgarh Sahib

The site associated with the execution of the two younger sons of the tenth Guru in 1705, commemorated every December by the Shaheedi Jor Mela, one of the largest gatherings in the region.

Rauza Sharif and Aam Khas Bagh, SirhindविरासतFatehgarh Sahib

Sirhind was a major Mughal-era town on the imperial road. The Rauza Sharif is the tomb complex of the seventeenth-century Naqshbandi Sufi Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi and draws pilgrims from Afghanistan and Central Asia to its annual urs; the Aam Khas Bagh is the surviving Mughal garden and serai on the same road.

Qila Mubarak and Sheesh Mahal, PatialaविरासतPatiala

The fortified core of the Phulkian state of Patiala, an inward-facing complex of courts and painted apartments, with the Sheesh Mahal and its mirrored and muralled halls alongside. Patiala's court gave its name to a turban style, a salwar cut, a gharana of music and a measure of whisky.

Jagatjit Palace and the Moorish Mosque, KapurthalaविरासतKapurthala

A princely state whose ruler built in French and Moorish idioms — a palace modelled on European chateaux, now a school, and a mosque modelled on North African precedent. It is the clearest surviving evidence of how eclectic princely Punjab's taste was.

Sultanpur Lodhi and the Kali Beinतीर्थKapurthala

The town where Guru Nanak worked as a storekeeper before setting out on his travels, on the banks of the Kali Bein rivulet — itself the subject of one of India's better-known community river-cleaning efforts.

Dera Baba Nanak and the Kartarpur Corridorतीर्थGurdaspur

A border town on the Ravi from which, since November 2019, a dedicated corridor allows Indian pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan — where Guru Nanak spent his last years — and return the same day without a visa. For decades before that, pilgrims used binoculars mounted at the border to see the shrine across the fields.

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Saboतीर्थBathinda

One of the five takhts of Sikhism, where the tenth Guru is held to have prepared the final recension of the Guru Granth Sahib. Its Vaisakhi gathering is among Malwa's largest.

Harike Wetlandवन्यजीवTarn Taran and Ferozepur

A large shallow wetland formed where the Beas meets the Sutlej behind a barrage, listed under the Ramsar convention and one of northern India's most important sites for wintering waterfowl. Ropar and Kanjli are the region's two other Ramsar wetlands, and all three are reservoirs — artificial habitat that became essential.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February.

Chandigarh Capitol Complex and the Rock Gardenशहरीयूनेस्कोChandigarh

The city was planned from 1951 for a state that had lost its capital to Pakistan, with Le Corbusier responsible for the master plan and the government buildings. The Capitol Complex was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2016 as part of a transnational listing of his work. A few kilometres away, Nek Chand built the Rock Garden secretly from construction rubble, broken ceramics and industrial waste over nearly two decades — an unofficial answer to the official city, and now the more visited of the two.

SangholविरासतFatehgarh Sahib

An excavated mound with a Kushana-period stupa and a large find of carved railing pillars in the Mathura style, now in the site museum. Evidence that this plain was on the Buddhist network as thoroughly as it was later on every other one.

Rupnagar (Ropar) Harappan siteविरासतRupnagar

One of the first Harappan sites excavated in independent India, on the Sutlej where it leaves the hills. The Ghaggar-bed sites further south belong to the same civilisational spread and cluster along a river that has since dried.

MalerkotlaविरासतMalerkotla

A former princely state with a large Muslim population and a long-standing shared shrine culture — the dargah of Haider Sheikh draws Hindu, Sikh and Muslim visitors to its annual observance. The town is also the centre of the jutti trade and of the naqqal performance tradition.

QadianविरासतGurdaspur

A small Majha town that is the place of origin of the Ahmadiyya movement, founded there in 1889, and which still draws an international annual gathering of its followers.

Kila Raipurप्रकृतिLudhiana

A village outside Ludhiana that has hosted a rural sports meet since the 1930s — bullock-cart racing, tug of war, kabaddi and feats of strength — held over a few days each winter and known widely as the Rural Olympics.
