Meenakshi Amman Templeतीर्थMadurai

A double temple in which the goddess, not the god, is the principal deity and the one whose shrine a pilgrim approaches first — an inversion that governs the whole city's ritual year. Fourteen gopurams covered in thousands of painted stucco figures, a golden lotus tank, a thousand-pillar hall now serving as a sculpture museum, and a plan whose concentric streets the modern city still follows. Largely a seventeenth-century Nayak rebuilding of a far older foundation.

सबसे अच्छा समय: December–March; Chithirai in April–May for the festival.

Thirumalai Nayakkar MahalविरासतMadurai

Thirumalai Nayak's palace of 1636, of which only the courtyard and dance hall survive — his grandson stripped much of the complex to build at Tiruchirappalli, and the British restored what was left in the nineteenth century. The surviving colonnade carries columns some twenty metres high under a domed vault built without rafters or beams.

Alagar Koyil and Pazhamudircholaiतीर्थMadurai

The Kallazhagar Vishnu temple on a wooded hill twenty kilometres north-east of the city, with the Murugan shrine of Pazhamudircholai above it. Kallazhagar's ride from here to the Vaigai is the second half of the Chithirai festival.

Thiruparankundramतीर्थMadurai

The first of the six Murugan war-houses, cut into a granite hill on the city's south-west edge, with a rock-cut Pandya-period sanctum. The hill also carries Jain beds and inscriptions and a dargah at its summit.

Samanar Hills, KeezhakuyilkudiविरासतMadurai

Jain rock beds, Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions and a series of bas-relief tirthankara figures on a low hill west of Madurai — physical evidence of the Jain presence in the Pandya country from around the second century BCE, and among the earliest datable Tamil writing anywhere.

Vandiyur Mariamman TeppakulamविरासतMadurai

A vast square tank with an island shrine at its centre, dug in the 1640s and connected to the Vaigai by an underground channel. Its float festival in January is one of the few occasions it is deliberately kept full.

Gandhi Memorial MuseumविरासतMadurai

Housed in a seventeenth-century Nayak queen's palace. It holds the blood-stained dhoti Gandhi was wearing when he was shot, and it is in this city that he first adopted the single cloth, in 1921, after seeing what people here could afford to wear.

Palani Murugan Templeतीर्थDindigul

A hilltop Murugan temple reached by steps, a winch railway or a ropeway, and the destination of the largest foot pilgrimage in the Tamil country at Thaipusam. Its image is traditionally held to be made of navapashana, a nine-mineral amalgam attributed to the siddha Bogar — a claim of the tradition rather than of chemistry.

सबसे अच्छा समय: January–February, at Thaipusam.

Kodaikanalपहाड़Dindigul

A plateau station founded in 1845 by American missionaries of the Madurai mission as a refuge from the plain's fevers, with a lake that is entirely artificial — dammed by Vere Levinge in 1863 — shola forest in the folds, and an international school running since 1901.

सबसे अच्छा समय: September–November, and February–March.

Srivilliputhurतीर्थVirudhunagar

Andal's town. Its eleven-tier gopuram is the emblem on the Tamil Nadu state seal, its palkova street is a minor industry, and the Andal temple is the origin point of the Thiruppavai.

Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserveवन्यजीवVirudhunagar and Theni

Declared in 2021, joining the grizzled giant squirrel sanctuary at Srivilliputhur with the Megamalai forests — a wet-forest block on the eastern Ghats slope holding the grizzled giant squirrel, Nilgiri tahr and elephant, and a critical catchment for the Vaigai.

Cumbum valley and Suruli Fallsप्रकृतिTheni

A trough between two ranges, growing muscat table grapes in two crops a year, cardamom on the slopes above, and holding Suruli waterfall at its head. The road through Kumily to Kerala runs out of the valley's top end.

Mullaperiyar damविरासतTheni

An 1895 masonry dam of lime-surkhi construction that impounds a west-flowing river and sends its water east through a tunnel under the Ghats into the Vaigai catchment. The structure sits in Kerala territory and is operated under lease by Tamil Nadu, and the irrigation of five districts depends on it.

Dindigul Rock FortविरासतDindigul

A Nayak fort on a bare granite dome commanding the pass between the Palani hills and the Sirumalai, later held by Mysore. The climb takes half an hour and explains the whole regional geography in one view.

Sirumalaiपहाड़Dindigul

A detached hill block of around 1,600 metres with its own banana, coffee and citrus microclimate, eighteen hairpins up from the plain and far quieter than Kodaikanal.

AlanganallurशहरीMadurai

A village north of Madurai whose jallikattu on the third day of Pongal is the largest and most closely watched in the state, run down a narrowing lane from a temple gate.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Mid-January.

UsilampattiशहरीMadurai

A dryland town west of Madurai whose weekly livestock market is among the largest in South India — the place where the region's goat and cattle economy is actually transacted, at dawn, in cash.

Mattuthavani flower marketशहरीMadurai

Roughly a hundred commission shops in two long passages, opening before dawn, moving around twenty tonnes of jasmine a day in season and turning over between fifty lakh and a crore of rupees daily.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Any morning, before six.

Puthu MandapamविरासतMadurai

Thirumalai Nayak's pillared hall outside the Meenakshi temple's east gopuram, its yali columns now enclosing a working bazaar of tailors, tailors' apprentices and cloth stalls. A seventeenth-century monument in continuous commercial use, which is why it is in better repair than most.
