Madurai Tamil is the variety that Tamil cinema reaches for when it wants to signal directness, and it is genuinely distinct — faster, with reduced vowels, its own second-person and vocative particles, and a vocabulary of address that outsiders consistently mistake for rudeness. Around it sit two minority speech communities with entirely different histories, and a hill plateau where English has been an everyday school language for over a century.

The southern-central register — compressed vowels, a distinctive set of tag and vocative particles, and a rapid delivery. It is a prestige variety in film and an unmarked one at home, which is an unusual combination.

SaurashtraIndo-Aryan

An Indo-Aryan language spoken in the heart of Tamil country by families of silk weavers who migrated south by way of Gujarat and the Deccan and settled under Nayak patronage. It has its own script tradition, is written also in Tamil and Devanagari, and its speakers are fully bilingual.

Telugu-speaking settlement in the Cumbum valley and along the Ghat foot, a residue of the Vijayanagara and Nayak period, now largely bilingual.

Eri and kanmoi ஏரி / கண்மாய்	A bunded rain-fed tank. Eri is the general Tamil word; kanmoi is the southern one, used across this region. Tanks here are chained, so the overflow of one is the inflow of the next, and a breach upstream is a catastrophe for everyone below.
Oorani ஊரணி	The separate small pond reserved for drinking water, kept apart from the irrigation tank. Every dryland village has one and its maintenance is a village office.
Karisal கரிசல்	Black cotton soil that swells shut in the wet and cracks open in the dry. It also names a whole literary movement — karisal ilakkiyam, the fiction of the black-soil country.
Muzham முழம்	The measure from elbow to fingertip, and the unit in which flowers are sold. Prices are quoted per muzham at the stall and per kilogram at the market.
Poo santhai பூச் சந்தை	The flower market. Madurai's is at Mattuthavani, opens before dawn, handles roughly twenty tonnes of jasmine a day in season, and sets the price for a large part of South India.
Thoonganagaram தூங்கா நகரம்	The city that does not sleep — Madurai's own epithet for itself, and a literal description of a place whose food stalls and markets work through the night.
Naanmadakoodal நான்மாடக்கூடல்	An old poetic name for Madurai, understood as the meeting place of four halls or towers. Koodal, meeting place, is still used for the city in verse and in institution names.
Sangam சங்கம்	The literary academies Tamil tradition places at Madurai, which are held to have adjudicated poetry. The surviving Sangam anthologies are datable; the academies themselves are tradition rather than record, and the distinction is worth keeping.
Manju virattu and jallikattu மஞ்சு விரட்டு / ஜல்லிக்கட்டு	Bull-taming events held after Pongal, in which the bull is released into a crowd and men attempt to hold its hump. Alanganallur's is the best known; the practice is the reason the region's native cattle breeds still have breeding bulls.
Kalayam and koozh pot களயம்	The unglazed clay pot that koozh is soured in. It is never scrubbed clean, because the resident bacteria in the wall are what start the next batch.
Panai and karupatti பனை / கருப்பட்டி	The palmyra, and the dark jaggery boiled from its sap. In the dryland the tree is a whole economy — sap, fruit, fibre, leaf and timber.
Kodai கோடை	Summer. Kodaikanal is usually read as the summer forest or the gift of the forest, and either way the name says what the plateau is for.

Katru ullapothe thootrikkol	Winnow while the wind is blowing	Act while conditions allow. A proverb from a place where the wind through the Ghat gaps is both the winnowing tool and, now, the power supply.
Aazham ariyamal kaalai vidathe	Do not put your foot in without knowing the depth	Do not commit to something you have not measured. Said about tanks first and everything else since.
Aadi kaathu ammiyai nagarthum	The Aadi wind will shift a grinding stone	The July–August wind through the gaps is strong enough to move something immovable. Used about any force that arrives on schedule and cannot be argued with.
