Periyar Diversion Corridor

KeralaTamil Nadu

Water, through a tunnel. The 1895 Mullaperiyar dam sends a west-flowing Ghat river east under the watershed into the Vaigai system, and the cropping pattern of Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram rests on the release.

On the western side the catchment is a tiger reserve and a lake with no irrigation command; on the eastern side the same water is the difference between one rain-fed crop and two irrigated ones. The dam stands on one side of the line and is operated by the administration on the other.

Murugan Hill-Shrine Corridor

Tamil NaduMYSGSri Lanka

Thaipusam, the kavadi and the vow that goes with it — the padayatra to Palani, replicated at Batu Caves in Malaysia, at the Sri Thendayuthapani temple in Singapore and at Kataragama in Sri Lanka, with the same milk-pot offering, the same shaved head and the same drum patterns.

In Malaysia and Singapore Thaipusam became a public gazetted event with a formal procession route and a Tamil-diaspora civic dimension it does not have here; at Kataragama the shrine is shared with Buddhist and Vedda traditions and the deity is called Kataragama deviyo.

Saurashtra Weaver Corridor

GujaratMaharashtraTelanganaTamil Nadu

A community, a language and a silk-weaving trade, moving south from Saurashtra by way of the Deccan over several centuries and settling under Nayak patronage in Madurai and the towns around it. The language survives in daily use inside a Tamil-speaking city, with its own script tradition and its own printed literature.

In Gujarat the tie-and-dye tradition became bandhani on silk with large mirrored motifs; in Madurai the same resist technique became Sungudi on cotton, in small dots, sized for the heat of a dry plain.

Jasmine Trade Corridor

Tamil NaduKarnatakaKeralaAEFR

Jasminum sambac buds and the concrete and absolute extracted from them. Madurai malli moves as fresh flower to Gulf markets within a day of picking and as extract into perfumery, which is why a crop grown by smallholders on a few cents of land has an international price.

In the Gulf the trade is in fresh strung garlands for a Tamil and Malayali diaspora; in the perfume industry it is in solvent extract measured by the kilogram of concrete, and the grower sees neither market directly — the flowers still have to travel to Chennai or Kochi to be processed for export.

Kodaikanal Mission Hill Corridor

Tamil NaduUS

A hill station, a school and a public-health idea. American missionaries of the Madurai mission founded Kodaikanal in 1845 to escape the plain's fevers, and the international school they established in 1901 has drawn students from across Asia ever since.

The American connection produced a boarding-school and church infrastructure quite unlike the officer-and-club culture of the British hill stations further north; what the two share is a lake, a boat club and a climate that was the whole point.

Nayak Frontier Corridor

Tamil NaduAndhra PradeshKarnataka

A Telugu-speaking ruling class and its architecture. The Madurai Nayaks were Vijayanagara viceroys, and the building vocabulary they brought — long pillared corridors, rearing yali piers, thousand-pillar halls, painted stucco gopurams — runs from Madurai north through Srirangam to Lepakshi and Vijayanagara itself.

In the Telugu country these forms sit on granite temples of a different plan and a different scale; in Madurai they were applied to an existing Tamil temple and produced the fourteen-gopuram silhouette that is now the standard image of a South Indian temple.
