Amba Vilas (Mysore) PalaceविरासतMysuru
The present building went up between 1897 and 1912 after fire destroyed its wooden predecessor during a royal wedding, to designs by Henry Irwin — an Indo-Saracenic composite of Hoysala, Rajput, Islamic and Gothic elements built for a court that was consciously commissioning a public monument. Roughly a hundred thousand bulbs outline it on Dasara nights and Sunday evenings, and it takes over four million visitors a year.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–February; Sunday evening for the illumination.
Chamundi Hillतीर्थMysuru
A thousand-odd steps up a granite hill to the Chamundeshwari temple, with a black granite Nandi carved out of a single boulder on the way, dated by inscription to the seventeenth century. The goddess on the hill is the tutelary deity of the dynasty, which is why her image is what now rides in the Dasara howdah.
सबसे अच्छा समय: Early morning, October–February.
SrirangapatnaविरासतMandya
A river island fortified into the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, and the site where Tipu was killed when the walls were breached in 1799. The Ranganathaswamy temple here is Adi Ranga, the first of the three Ranganatha shrines strung down the Cauvery; the Daria Daulat summer palace carries murals of Tipu's campaigns painted on its outer walls, and the Gumbaz holds the family tombs.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–February.
Keshava temple, Somanathapuraविरासतयूनेस्कोMysuru
A Hoysala temple of 1268, three shrines on a star-shaped plan around a common pillared hall, standing complete inside its own cloistered courtyard. Inscribed in 2023 as one of the three components of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas; the other two are up in the hill country. The carving is as fine as it is because the stone is chloritic schist, soft enough to lathe and to undercut when quarried and hardening on exposure.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–February, morning light.
Shravanabelagolaतीर्थHassan
A 57-foot monolithic Bahubali carved from a single granite outcrop around 981 CE at the instance of Chavundaraya, a Ganga minister, standing at the top of six hundred rock-cut steps on Vindhyagiri. Every twelve years the statue is anointed head to foot from a scaffold in the Mahamastakabhisheka; the last was in 2018 and the next falls in 2030.
कैसे पहुँचें: About 145 km from Bengaluru and 85 km from Mysuru by road.
Melukoteतीर्थMandya
A rocky hilltop town of Cheluvanarayana Swamy, where Ramanuja is recorded as having lived for years and reorganised temple practice. Its Vairamudi festival brings out a diamond crown kept under seal for the rest of the year; the temple puliyogare is the reference version of the dish, and the town is also a centre of Sanskrit learning.
सबसे अच्छा समय: March–April for Vairamudi; otherwise October–February.
TalakaduविरासतMysuru
A group of temples on the Cauvery's south bank progressively buried under wind-driven river sand, some excavated back out and some still under the dunes. The Panchalinga Darshana, a circuit of five Shiva shrines here, is observed only in years when a rare calendrical conjunction recurs — an interval of roughly twelve years.
Krishnaraja Sagara and Brindavan GardensविरासतMandya
The dam that made the canal command what it is, built across the Cauvery under Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV with M. Visvesvaraya as chief engineer and completed in 1932, using a lime-and-surkhi mortar rather than cement. The terraced gardens below it, with their musical fountain, were laid out as part of the same project and remain one of the most visited places in the region.
सबसे अच्छा समय: Evening, for the fountain.
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuaryवन्यजीवMandya
Islets in the Cauvery just below Srirangapatna, formed by an eighteenth-century check dam and notified as a sanctuary in 1940 after Salim Ali surveyed them. Painted stork, spot-billed pelican, river tern and a resident population of mugger crocodile, seen from a boat at close range.
सबसे अच्छा समय: December–June, nesting season.
Bandipur Tiger Reserveवन्यजीवChamarajanagar
Dry deciduous and teak forest set aside as a game sanctuary by the Mysore state in 1931 and made one of the first Project Tiger reserves in 1973. It sits at the join of four protected areas across three linguistic regions, and the elephants move between them without reference to any of it.
सबसे अच्छा समय: February–May.
Nagarahole (Rajiv Gandhi) National Parkवन्यजीवMysuru and Kodagu
Moist deciduous forest on the Kabini backwaters, with among the highest densities of large herbivores recorded anywhere in Asia and, consequently, of tiger and leopard. The dry-season congregation on the Kabini shoreline is the single best wildlife spectacle in southern India.
सबसे अच्छा समय: March–May.
Biligirirangana and Male Mahadeshwara Hillsतीर्थChamarajanagar
Two forested ranges that carry both a wildlife reserve and a live pilgrimage. The BR Hills are the home ground of the Sholaga community; MM Hills draws lakh-scale crowds to a temple reached by a ghat road, and the Mahadeshwara epic sung by Kamsale performers belongs to this landscape and nowhere else.
Shivanasamudraप्रकृतिMandya and Chamarajanagar
The Cauvery splits round an island and drops twice, as Gaganachukki and Bharachukki. The hydro-electric station commissioned here in 1902 was among the first in Asia, and its power went overland to the Kolar gold mines before anything else. The Madhya Ranga temple, the middle of the three Ranganathas, stands on the island.
सबसे अच्छा समय: August–January, for water volume.
Bengaluru's pete, Lalbagh and Cubbon ParkशहरीBengaluru Urban
The eighteenth-century market grid — Chikkapete, Balepete, Akkipete — still trades by street and by commodity. Lalbagh was begun as a garden by Hyder Ali and extended by Tipu, and holds a granite outcrop dated to around three billion years and one of Kempe Gowda's four boundary towers. Cubbon Park and the red Attara Kacheri belong to the later administrative city.
Nandi Hills and Devarayanadurgaपहाड़Chikkaballapur and Tumakuru
Granite hills rising out of the plateau with Chola and later fortifications on top, a Tipu-era summer residence at Nandi, and — the reason people actually go — a cloud inversion at dawn in the cool months. The South Pennar rises on the Nandi massif and runs east, away from the Cauvery entirely.
सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February, at sunrise.
