स्वतंत्रता सेनानी

There was no 1857 in Old Mysore, because there was nothing here for the Company to annex — the state survived as a subsidiary ally throughout. Resistance therefore took two unusual shapes. The first was a peasant rising in 1830–31 against the maharaja's own revenue administration, whose consequence was fifty years of direct Company rule. The second, a century later, was a movement inside the state for responsible government, which ran alongside the Congress but was directed at the palace and the dewan rather than at the Raj, and which was fought largely over the right to fly a flag. The two killings that define it, at Vidurashwatha in April 1938, were carried out by the Mysore state's own police.

विद्रोह और आंदोलन

The Nagar rising and the Commission of 18311830–31

A rising of cultivators against revenue exactions began in the Nagar country in the state's north-west — treated here with Malnad — and spread widely enough that the maharaja's government could not put it down.

परिणाम: In 1831 the East India Company assumed direct administration of Mysore under a Commission. The Wodeyars did not govern again until the Rendition of 1881.

The flag satyagraha at ShivapuraApril 1938

The Mysore government's ban on flying the Congress flag at political meetings was defied at Shivapura, near Maddur, from 11 April 1938. The organisers included T. Siddalingaiah, K. C. Reddy, K. Hanumanthaiah and Bhoopalam Chandrashekaraiah, and the campaign spread across the state's northern and eastern taluks within a fortnight.

परिणाम: The satyagraha carried the demand for responsible government inside Mysore into the villages for the first time.

The firing at Vidurashwatha25 April 1938

A crowd assembled to hoist the Congress flag at Vidurashwatha, in Gauribidanur taluk, was fired on by Mysore state police. Contemporary and later accounts put the dead at more than thirty. The site is locally called the Jallianwala Bagh of the south.

परिणाम: The dead were cremated near the Vidurashwatha temple, where a memorial and later a school were built. The firing forced negotiation between the Mysore government and the Congress and is the turning point of the movement inside the state.
