- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) — The region's main gateway, in the middle of the suburbs rather than outside them.
- Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) — The second airport at Ulwe across the harbour, which opened in phases and takes pressure off BOM.

- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) — Long-distance and suburban Central line trains, in a UNESCO-inscribed building.
- Mumbai Central (BCT) — The Western line terminus for Gujarat, Rajasthan and the north; Bandra Terminus a few stations north takes the overflow.
- Thane (TNA) — The destination of India's first passenger train, in 1853, and now one of the busiest suburban stations in the world.
- Vasai Road (BSR) — For the Vasai–Bassein belt and the Palghar coast.
- Panvel (PNVL) — The junction for the Konkan Railway and the Raigad creek country.
- Roha (ROHA) — Where the Konkan Railway proper begins, running south from 1998.

The suburban rail network carries the region and is the reason it works at all; the metro is filling in the east–west gaps that the north–south lines never covered. Autorickshaws are not permitted in the island city south of Bandra and Sion, which is why taxis still exist there. Everything north of Thane and south of Panvel needs a car or a state bus.
