Omkareshwar and Mandhata islandतीर्थKhandwa

A jyotirlinga on an island in the Narmada whose outline is held to resemble the Devanagari syllable ॐ. There are two temples and an old argument about which holds the jyotirlinga — Omkareshwar on the island and Mamleshwar on the south bank — and pilgrims settle it by visiting both. The temple was rebuilt under Holkar patronage in the eighteenth century; tradition places Adi Shankara's meeting with his teacher in a cave below it, and a colossal seated statue of Shankara was installed above the site in 2023. A circuit of the island on foot is a standard observance.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March; Kartik Purnima and Mahashivratri are the peaks. कैसे पहुँचें: About 80 km from Indore and 70 km from Khandwa; bridge and boat both reach the island.

MaheshwarविरासतKhargone

Ahilyabai Holkar's capital from 1767 until her death, and the Holkar seat until the state moved to Indore in 1818. The fort stands directly above the river with the ghats built out below it, and the weaving sheds are inside the fort walls. Identified with the Mahishmati of the Sanskrit epics, which gives the site a depth nothing above ground can show.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March.

Asirgarh FortविरासतBurhanpur

A hill fort on a Satpura spur commanding the pass between the Narmada and Tapti valleys — the corridor any army moving between north India and the Deccan had to use, which is why it was called the key to the Deccan. Akbar took it in 1601, and it was the last conquest of his reign.

Shahi Qila and the Burhanpur Mughal quarterविरासतBurhanpur

Burhanpur was founded in 1388 by the Faruqi sultans of Khandesh and became the Mughal headquarters for the Deccan after 1601. Mumtaz Mahal died here in 1631, and was buried at Burhanpur for about six months — the Ahukhana garden across the Tapti is the site usually named — before her body was taken to Agra. The palace retains its hamam, with ceiling painting that local tradition connects to the Taj Mahal's design.

Khooni BhandaraविरासतBurhanpur

An underground water system built in the early seventeenth century under Abdurrahim Khan-i-Khanan, tapping groundwater at the Satpura foot through tunnels with vertical inspection shafts and delivering it by gravity into masonry karanj within the city. Part of it still supplies water to households in the old town, four centuries on — which makes it a working utility rather than a monument.

Dargah-e-Hakimiतीर्थBurhanpur

The shrine complex of Syedi Abdul Qadir Hakimuddin, and a principal pilgrimage destination for the Dawoodi Bohra community, with a large annual gathering and its own guest and kitchen infrastructure. It is the reason Burhanpur's visitor economy looks nothing like Khandwa's.

Bawangajaतीर्थBarwani

A standing figure of Rishabhanatha cut directly out of the rock face of the Satpura scarp, about 84 feet high — the name means fifty-two yards, which is the traditional measure of it. It is among the tallest rock-cut statues in India and is reached by a climb from the road below.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February.

Khandwa and its four kundsविरासतKhandwa

The old town is laid out around four masonry tanks set at its four quarters — Bhima Kund, Padam Kund, Suraj Kund and Rameshwar Kund. The town's name is taken from the Khandava forest of the epics, and the kunds are the oldest visible structures in it.

Dada Darbar, Khandwaतीर्थKhandwa

The shrine of Dadaji Dhuniwale, a twentieth-century ascetic who kept a perpetual fire, and one of the largest devotional gatherings in eastern Nimar. The fire is still maintained.

Sant Singaji samadhiतीर्थKhandwa

The samadhi of the sixteenth-century Nimadi saint, with an annual fair that fills the surrounding fields. Bhajan mandalis come from across the valley and sing in relays through the nights of the fair.

Indira Sagar and Narmada Nagarप्रकृतिKhandwa

The largest reservoir in India by volume, impounded at Punasa on the Narmada. The scale is the point in both directions: the storage is the basis of irrigation and power across the valley, and the submergence displaced a very large number of valley-floor households, which is the origin of the movement that has shaped Nimar's politics since the 1980s.

Hanuwantiyaप्रकृतिKhandwa

An island and shoreline resort on the Indira Sagar backwaters, and the site of the state's Jal Mahotsav water festival since 2016 — a tourism economy built directly on top of a reservoir that submerged farmland.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–February.

Mandleshwar and the Narmada ghat townsतीर्थKhargone

Mandleshwar, Barwaha, Sanawad and the smaller ghats along the reach — administrative towns of the Holkar period that function today as halts on the Parikrama and as bathing places at the festival dates.

The Satpura slope and the Bhil and Barela countryप्रकृतिBarwani, Khargone, Khandwa

Teak and mixed deciduous forest climbing away from the valley floor, with Bhil, Bhilala and Barela villages through it. This is where the mahua, chironji and tendu come from, and where the Bhagoria markets are held.
