Kolattam and kummi at kodaiलोक
Stick and clap circle dances performed on the temple ground through the festival nights, with the songs carrying local narrative rather than a fixed repertoire.
कौन करता है: Women and girls of the village. मौका: Temple festivals through Chithirai and Vaikasi
Poikkal kudirai attamलोक
The dummy-horse dance — a light frame worn at the waist with false legs, danced to thavil and nadaswaram in procession, which is the Tamil half of the region's festival street.
कौन करता है: Trained troupes hired for festivals. मौका: Temple and church festival processions
Adi murai and varma kalaiयुद्धकला
The southern martial tradition, weighted to empty-hand technique and to varmam — the pressure-point knowledge that doubles as a bone-setting and manual-therapy practice. Most asans here earn their living from the therapy rather than the fighting, and the two are taught as one body of knowledge.
कौन करता है: Hereditary asans and their students. मौका: Training, and as a therapeutic practice
Kaikottikaliलोक
The Travancore clapping circle dance, still danced at Onam in the western taluks, in a district whose other half is preparing for Pongal four months later.
कौन करता है: Women, in a circle around the flower carpet. मौका: Onam in the Malayalam-speaking taluks
Chavittu Nadakamअनुष्ठान
Musical theatre performed on a resonant wooden stage that the actors stamp on, so the stamping is part of the score. The subjects are European chivalric ones, the language is the coast's own, and the form is shared with the Latin Catholic villages up the western shore.
कौन करता है: Latin Catholic parish troupes. मौका: Parish feasts on the coast
संगीत
Villupattu
The bow song — a large wooden bow strung with bells is set over an inverted earthen pot as a resonator and struck with sticks while a lead narrator sings a story and a chorus answers. It is strongest in this district, performed at Sasta and Amman temples, and its narratives include local hero and martyrdom stories rather than only Puranic ones.
Two ensembles at one festival
It is normal here for a temple festival to have a nadaswaram and thavil ensemble at the shrine and a Kerala-style drum line in the procession outside it. Nothing about that is remarked on locally, and it is the most reliable way for a visitor to hear where they are.
Ayyavazhi devotional singing
The Akilathirattu Ammanai, the Ayyavazhi scripture composed in the nineteenth century in Tamil ammanai ballad metre, is sung and recited at the pathis. It is a substantial verse text produced entirely within this region.
Tamil congregational hymnody
Protestant hymn-singing in Tamil lyric metres, introduced through the London Missionary Society stations from 1806 and now a large body of local composition, sung in village churches across the inland taluks.
रंगमंच
Villupattu as public messaging
Because the form holds an audience for hours and needs no stage, government departments and campaign organisations have used villupattu troupes for literacy, health and civic messaging for decades. It is one of the few Indian folk forms with a continuous second life as a state medium.
Parish feast drama
Passion and saint's-life plays staged on temporary platforms during coastal parish feasts, sharing performers and staging conventions with chavittu nadakam.
शिल्प
Temple jewellery of Nagercoil जीआई पंजीकृत Kanyakumari (Nagercoil)
Ornament made for temple deities and for Bharatanatyam dancers rather than for daily wear, and one of the few crafts of this region with an independent reputation. Registered as a geographical indication in 2007–08.
सामग्री: Gold and silver foil over a lac core, set with red and green stones. तकनीक: A lac core is shaped, wrapped in worked gold or silver sheet and set with coloured stones in raised collets, so a large ornament stays light enough to be danced in.
Kanniyakumari clove जीआई पंजीकृत Kanyakumari
The clove gardens of the southern Ghats slope produce a large share of India's crop, grown mostly on smallholdings under shade alongside nutmeg and pepper. Registered as a geographical indication in 2021–22.
सामग्री: Clove buds from the Ghats slope gardens. तकनीक: Buds are picked before they open, blanched briefly and sun-dried on mats until they darken and rattle. Timing the pick is the whole skill; an opened bud is worth a fraction of a closed one.
Timber joinery of the Padmanabhapuram tradition जीआई योग्य Kanyakumari
The carpentry tradition that built the palace and the older houses around it, still practised by thachan families doing restoration and temple work.
सामग्री: Teak, jackwood and rosewood. तकनीक: Post-and-beam framing with pegged joints and no metal fastening, sloping tiled roofs carried on carved brackets, and floors polished from a lime, egg-white and charcoal mix.
Coastal boat building Kanyakumari
A working craft in transition. The shapes are dictated by launching through surf off an open beach, which is why the boats here differ from those of the sheltered lagoon coast to the north.
सामग्री: Timber, and now fibreglass. तकनीक: Log kattumaram and plank canoes built to local shapes for surf launching, increasingly replaced by moulded fibreglass hulls fitted with outboards.
Rubber sheet processing Kanyakumari (Marthandam, Kuzhithurai)
Smallholder rubber is the cash crop of the midland, and the sheet-rolling and smoking sheds behind the houses are the visible end of it. The grading standards used are those of the Rubber Board across the border.
सामग्री: Field latex. तकनीक: Latex coagulated in pans, rolled through a ribbed mangle and smoke-dried over several days into graded sheets.
Palm and screw pine plaiting Kanyakumari
Mats, baskets, fish carriers and the roofing that still covers working sheds. Almost entirely a women's craft and almost entirely uncommercialised.
सामग्री: Palmyra leaf, screw pine, coconut frond. तकनीक: Leaves are dried, split to width and plaited without a loom or a frame.
