Mizo–Kuki–Chin Hills · Northeast Hill Massif
A city built along a ridge at a little over 1,100 m, where the streets follow contours and the buildings stack down the slope on stilts, so a house may be entered on its top floor from the road and have four storeys below it. Bara Bazar is the working market — smoked meat on racks, fermented shoot in bottles, and vegetables sold by women who have brought them in from villages that morning. Most of the city closes on Sunday.

The rice bowl — an unusually broad flat valley floor at around 1,600 m, terraced for irrigated paddy since 1898 in a region that otherwise farms hillsides. The eastern rim looks straight across the Tiau into the Chin Hills, and the vineyards at Hnahlan nearby supply the grape wine sold as Zawlaidi.

At 2,157 m the highest point in these hills, and named in Lai for what is on top of it — a great meadow, open grass above the forest line, held in older belief to be the ground of local deities. Protected since 1992; orchids, rhododendron, and one of the few Indian records for clouded leopard.

The highest waterfall in Mizoram, dropping in two stages through dense forest near Thenzawl and generally given as about 229 m. It is viewed from a platform across the gorge, because there is no way down.

A 1,465 m cliff-sided peak an hour west of Aizawl, with a reconstructed traditional Mizo village of thatched houses at its base built to show the pre-twentieth-century settlement plan. On a clear winter day the plains of Bangladesh are visible from the top.

Semi-evergreen and montane forest on the Myanmar frontier, continuous in ecology with the Chin Hills across the ridge. Serow, hoolock gibbon, leopard and a heavy orchid list; one of the least-visited national parks in India.

The largest protected area in Mizoram, on the western slope where the hills fall towards the plains. Lower, hotter and wetter than the ridge country, with elephant, gaur, hoolock gibbon and clouded leopard.

The largest lake in the region, in the far south in Mara country, surrounded by swamp forest and reached by a long road. Local accounts explain its origin as a village that sank; geologists prefer a landslide-dammed depression.
A small lake in a forested basin near Saitual — the mustard-field lake, by its name — with a state holiday resort on its rim and the most-photographed water in the state.
The weaving town. Several thousand fly-shuttle looms in household workshops turn out most of the puans sold across the region, including the four GI-registered cloths that carry Thenzawl's name in their applications. Vantawng Falls and a deer park are within a short drive.
The clearest single place to read the region's material culture — looms, puans by type, hunting and agricultural tools, gongs, and the household objects of the pre-Christian village, arranged in a small building in the middle of Aizawl.
A heart-shaped lake about a mile long, lying across the Tiau in Myanmar's Chin State roughly 22 km from Champhai. In the pre-Christian cosmology every soul travelling to pialral passed it, which makes a lake outside India the single most important site in the old Mizo geography of the afterlife.

A forested ridge about 50 km south of Aizawl whose tree cover was protected by the chiefs before any forest department existed — one of the oldest deliberate conservation decisions in the region, and now a walking and camping hill.
The market town of the Manipur hills, where Thadou, Paite, Hmar, Vaiphei, Zou, Simte, Gangte and Mizo are all in daily use within a few streets, each community maintaining its own hymnal, press and weave.
