Cherawलोक
Four to six men kneel in pairs and clap long bamboo staves together in a fixed rhythm on a cross-frame of horizontal poles; women in puanchei step in and out of the closing gaps. The dance is a timing problem solved by ear — the pole-clappers are the instrument, and the steps are laid over their beat rather than over a drum. It is the region's export image, and in March 2010 Aizawl assembled ten thousand seven hundred and thirty-six dancers for it, taking a Guinness record for the largest bamboo dance.
कौन करता है: Mizo women dancers with men working the poles. मौका: Chapchar Kut and public celebration
Khuallamलोक
The dance of guests. Performers move in a circle draped in puandum to the beat of the darbu, the set of brass gongs, entering the ground as the invited party of a household holding a feast of merit. It is choreography as etiquette — the guests' arrival is itself the performance.
कौन करता है: Mizo men and women, in puandum. मौका: Khuangchawi, the ceremony of a man giving a public feast
Chheihlamलोक
Danced to chheih hla, a chanted song improvised on the spot, with the group seated in a ring clapping and one or two dancers rising in the middle. Unlike the festival dances it has no fixed costume and no fixed text, and it developed in the early twentieth century as an evening entertainment rather than a ritual.
कौन करता है: Mixed groups, seated and standing. मौका: Informal evening gatherings
Chaiलोक
A circle in which men and women alternate, the men holding the women's waists and the women resting their hands on the men's shoulders, moving to drum and gong and singing chai hla. It is the oldest of the Kut dances and the one that keeps the festival's song repertoire alive.
कौन करता है: Men and women alternating. मौका: Chapchar Kut
Sarlamkaiलोक
Also called Solakia. Gongs and cymbals set the beat rather than drums, and the movement is heavier and more deliberate than the central-hills dances — one of several markers separating the southern Lai and Mara repertoire from the Duhlian-speaking centre.
कौन करता है: Lai (Pawi) and Mara communities of the southern hills. मौका: Victory and post-hunt celebration
Zangtalamलोक
A men-and-women line dance from the Churachandpur uplands, danced with a hand-clap pattern that carries the rhythm where a drum is not available. It sits alongside a dozen comparable dances among the Thadou, Vaiphei, Hmar and Zou, each of which reads as a variation on the same idea.
कौन करता है: Paite communities of the Manipur hills. मौका: Community gatherings and Kut
संगीत
Lengkhawm zai
The dominant musical form of the region, and the least exported. Hymn texts in Mizo, sung slowly and in unison by a room of people seated on the floor, driven by the khuang drum and a body-swaying pulse rather than by harmony. It grew out of the revival movements of the early twentieth century, took its rhythm from the older village singing it replaced, and is what is actually sung at a Mizo funeral or a night gathering.
Hlado
The hunter's chant, shouted rather than sung, delivered on returning from a kill to announce it to the village. Its lines are formulaic and its function is signalling — the oldest surviving vocal form here, and one that needs no instrument and no audience in front of it.
Bawh hla
The warrior's chant, performed after a successful raid or in the retelling of one. Like hlado it is chanted at pitch rather than sung to a tune, and it survives in performance settings and in recordings rather than in use.
Puma zai
A song movement that spread through the Lushai Hills in the first decade of the twentieth century, built on a repeating refrain onto which singers attached endless new verses. It travelled village to village faster than any authority could track and is studied as the first mass-participation cultural movement recorded in these hills.
Darbu and khuang
The instrumental base — darbu, a set of three brass gongs struck in a fixed pattern, and khuang, the hollowed-log drum with skin heads that sets the tempo for both dance and hymn. A Mizo congregation and a Chapchar Kut ground use the same drum.
रंगमंच
Kut ground performance
The Kut festivals function as the region's staging institution rather than a theatre tradition proper — dance troupes from villages and localities perform in sequence on a public ground, in costume, judged by an audience that knows the repertoire. There is no masked or narrative drama tradition of the kind found further west.
शिल्प
Loin-loom and fly-shuttle puan weaving जीआई पंजीकृत Serchhip (Thenzawl), Aizawl, Champhai
Five Mizo cloths were registered as geographical indications in August 2019. The craft is overwhelmingly practised by women, and in Thenzawl it is a full rural industry rather than a household activity.
सामग्री: Cotton, acrylic and mercerised yarn. तकनीक: Backstrap weaving of narrow panels with supplementary-weft motif insertion, joined into a single cloth; fly-shuttle frame looms for commercial production.
Bamboo and cane basketry जीआई योग्य Across the region
The conical back-basket carried by a headband is the working tool of jhum agriculture, and it is made, repaired and replaced at home. With 57 per cent of Mizoram under bamboo, the material is the cheapest thing in the economy and is used for house frames, water pipes, floors, fences and cooking vessels.
सामग्री: Melocanna and Bambusa culms, cane. तकनीक: Split-and-plait weaving of carrying baskets, sieves, trays, mats and fish traps.
Khumbeu bamboo hat जीआई योग्य Aizawl and the central hills
A working rain hat that became a ceremonial object, now worn chiefly with dance costume. Its shape is the practical answer to two thousand millimetres of rain falling on someone bent over a hillside.
सामग्री: Bamboo splits and waterproofing leaf. तकनीक: Close-plaited conical crown built to shed monsoon rain.
Blacksmithing — the dao Village smithies across the region
The chempui or dao does everything here — clears jhum, splits bamboo, butchers, builds a house. Village smiths were historically a distinct occupational group, and a household's blade was maintained rather than replaced.
सामग्री: Iron. तकनीक: Forge-welding and grinding of a heavy single-edged blade with a wooden haft.
Mizo chilli cultivation जीआई पंजीकृत Champhai, Serchhip and the eastern belt
Mizo Chilli, a Capsicum frutescens bird's-eye type, holds a geographical indication in the agricultural class. It is small, thin-walled, very hot and aromatic, and it is the only spice in the regional kitchen that anyone bothers to argue about.
सामग्री: Capsicum, bird's-eye type. तकनीक: Jhum-plot and homestead cultivation, sun-dried or sold fresh.
Wood carving and house building Across the region
Houses are built on stilted platforms cut into the slope, so the floor is level while the ground beneath it is not. The lower space historically held livestock; the arrangement is a direct response to having no flat land to build on.
सामग्री: Timber and bamboo. तकनीक: Post-and-beam framing on a hillside platform, with split-bamboo flooring and thatch or tin roof.
