Chittorgarh Fortविरासतयूनेस्कोChittorgarh
A fort covering some 280 hectares on a mesa standing about 180 m above the plain, reached through seven successive gates. It was besieged and taken three times — by Alauddin Khalji in 1303, by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat in 1535 and by Akbar in 1568 — and on each occasion the chronicles record a jauhar inside the walls followed by the garrison riding out. Rana Kumbha's nine-storey Vijay Stambh of the 1440s and the earlier Jain Kirti Stambh both still stand, as do the Gaumukh reservoir and the Meera temple. Part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage inscription of 2013.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March. कैसे पहुँचें: Chittaurgarh Junction (COR) is on the Delhi–Mumbai and Ajmer–Ratlam lines; the fort is 5 km from it.
Kumbhalgarhविरासतयूनेस्कोRajsamand
Rana Kumbha's fifteenth-century fort on a 1,100 m ridge, with a perimeter wall running roughly 36 km along the crest — commonly cited as one of the longest continuous walls anywhere. Maharana Pratap was born here in 1540, and the fort served as Mewar's fallback capital whenever Chittorgarh was untenable. The surrounding sanctuary is one of the few places in India where the Indian wolf is regularly recorded.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March; the ridge is at its best just after the monsoon.
Ranakpur Jain templeतीर्थPali
The Chaumukha temple to Adinath, begun in the fifteenth century on land granted by Rana Kumbha and funded by the merchant Dharanashah. It has four entrances on four sides and something on the order of 1,440 carved pillars, no two of them repeating, arranged so that the central image is visible from every direction.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March.
Udaipur City Palace and Lake PicholaशहरीUdaipur
Mewar moved its capital here in 1559, into the enclosed Girwa basin, and built the palace along the eastern shore over roughly four centuries and twenty-two reigns, which is why it reads as a range of buildings rather than one. Pichola itself was dammed in the fourteenth century by a grain carrier named Pichhu and enlarged afterwards. Jag Mandir on its island sheltered the rebel Mughal prince Khurram — later Shah Jahan — in 1623; Jag Niwas, built in the 1740s, is now a hotel.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March, or during the monsoon when the lakes are full. कैसे पहुँचें: Udaipur City (UDZ) railway station and Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) at Dabok, 22 km out.
Shrinathji temple, Nathdwaraतीर्थRajsamand
The principal seat of the Pushtimarg sect. The image was moved from Govardhan in Braj in 1672 to keep it out of reach of Aurangzeb's iconoclasm and, by the account the town tells, the cart carrying it sank at the village of Sihad and would not move, which settled the question of where it would live. The building is a haveli, not a temple: no spire, a household layout, and a day divided into eight darshans with a food offering at each.
सबसे अच्छा समय: Annakut after Diwali and Janmashtami are the biggest days; the temple closes between darshans, so check the timings before arriving..
Eklingjiतीर्थUdaipur
The temple at Kailashpuri, 22 km north of Udaipur, whose deity is the formal sovereign of Mewar — the Maharana ruled as his Diwan. The present complex was largely rebuilt in the fifteenth century under Rana Raimal. The tenth-century Sas-Bahu temples and the ruins of Nagda, Mewar's early capital, are a short walk away.
Haldighati and Rakt TalaiविरासतRajsamand
The pass where Maharana Pratap's force met a Mughal army under Man Singh I of Amber on 18 June 1576. The ground is yellow ochre clay, which is where the name comes from. Pratap's horse Chetak has a memorial here, and the field itself is a low open bowl that repays walking rather than driving past.
Jaisamand Lakeप्रकृतिUdaipur
A masonry dam completed in 1691 under Maharana Jai Singh, holding what was for two centuries among the largest artificial lakes anywhere. Marble elephants line the bund, and the islands in it are settled by Bhil villages whose access is by boat.
MenalविरासतChittorgarh
An eleventh- and twelfth-century Shaiva temple cluster of the Chahamana period, standing on the lip of a gorge where a seasonal stream drops as a waterfall through the monsoon. It is on the Chittorgarh–Bundi road and almost always empty, which is not a comment on the carving.
सबसे अच्छा समय: July–September, when the fall is running.
Rajsamand Lake and the Raj PrashastiविरासतRajsamand
A dam built from 1662 under Maharana Raj Singh I as famine relief work. Its stepped embankment at Nauchowki carries the Raj Prashasti, a Sanskrit inscription cut across a set of large marble slabs and generally described as the longest stone inscription in India. It is a court history, carved as public infrastructure.
Kankroliतीर्थRajsamand
The Dwarkadhish temple on the Rajsamand embankment, one of the seven Pushtimarg seats, and the second pole of the region's Vaishnav calendar after Nathdwara. Its Jal Jhulni procession runs onto the lake itself.
ZawarविरासतUdaipur
Mine workings in the hills south of Udaipur where zinc was smelted by downward distillation in banks of clay retorts. The retort debris has been dated to well before the technique was described anywhere in Europe, which makes this the earliest known site of industrial-scale zinc production.
AharविरासतUdaipur
Two things in one place: the type site of the Ahar-Banas chalcolithic culture, excavated on the stream east of Udaipur, and the Mahasatiya, the royal cremation ground where the Mewar rulers' cenotaphs stand in rows. The small museum holds the excavated material.
Sitamata Wildlife Sanctuaryवन्यजीवPratapgarh
Teak and mahua forest on the plateau edge, and the most reliable place in Rajasthan to see the Indian giant flying squirrel. It also holds the region's densest concentration of mahua trees, which is an economic fact as much as an ecological one.
सबसे अच्छा समय: November–March.
Shilpgram and the Bhartiya Lok Kala MandalशहरीUdaipur
Two working institutions rather than monuments — a rural arts complex on the western edge of Udaipur with reconstructed dwellings from across western India, and the folk-arts museum and puppet theatre founded in 1952 that kept Rajasthani string puppetry in continuous performance.
BijoliaविरासतBhilwara
Twelfth-century temples and rock inscriptions on the plateau, and the village that gave its name to the Bijolia peasant movement — a long agitation against levies on Mewar tenants that ran from 1897 into the 1940s and became the template for peasant organising across Rajputana.
