Gavri songsBhili and Mewari

Cyclical songs framing each play in the sequence, all of them returning to the proposition that the goddess will settle whatever is wrong. The plays themselves take on theft, debt, the forest officer and the moneylender as readily as they take on demons.

The forty-day Gavri season.

Gangaur songsMewari

Girls and women sing to Gauri while making and dressing her image, asking for a good husband or a long life for the one they have. The refrain most people know opens "Gor gor gomati".

The eighteen days of Chaitra leading to Gangaur.

Meera's padasMewari-inflected Braj

Devotion to Krishna framed as an open refusal of the marriage and household role a sixteenth-century Rajput woman was assigned. The refusal is the content, not a later reading of it.

Sung anywhere, and formally in bhajan gatherings.

Devnarayan ki PhadMewari

The birth, cattle-raiding, betrayal and deification of Devnarayan, sung by a Bhopa against a painted scroll. Longer than the Pabuji cycle and centred on a different community.

All-night phad readings in the Bhilwara tract.

RatijagaMewari

A night-long vigil in which women sing through a sequence invoking each family deity in turn. The order of the deities is the family's own and is one of the ways a lineage's history is actually transmitted.

The night before a wedding or after a birth.

HichkiMewari and Marwari

A woman gets the hiccups and takes it as proof that someone far away is thinking of her. The whole song is built on that one piece of folk belief.

Sung by women, often at weddings.

Haveli kirtanBraj

Krishna's day, sung in sequence — waking, dressing, grazing, eating, returning, sleeping. The temple's musical year is fixed, so the same composition arrives at the same hour of the same day each year.

The eight daily darshans at Nathdwara.
