Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaramतीर्थRamanathapuram
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the southern anchor of the Kashi–Rameswaram pilgrimage. Its outer corridor is the longest of any temple in India — roughly 400 feet on the east and west and 640 feet on the north and south, close to seven metres high, with about 1,212 pillars — built between 1763 and 1795 under Muthuramalinga Sethupati. The island has no granite, so every stone was ferried across. Twenty-two theerthams inside the temple are bathed in sequence, and the sanctum holds two lingams, of which the one Hanuman is said to have brought from Kailash is worshipped first.
सबसे अच्छा समय: December–February.
DhanushkodiविरासतRamanathapuram
A port and railhead at the tip of the spit until the night of 22–23 December 1964, when a cyclone put a surge of more than seven metres across it, destroyed the town, and swept away the Pamban–Dhanushkodi passenger train with about two hundred people aboard. The town was never rebuilt. The church, the station and the water tank stand as ruins on a sandbar with sea on both sides.
सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February; the road is now metalled to the tip.
Pamban bridgesविरासतRamanathapuram
Two bridges over the same channel. The 1914 rail bridge carried a Scherzer rolling-lift bascule that opened for shipping and was rebuilt in forty-six days after the 1964 cyclone by a young engineer named E. Sreedharan; it stopped carrying trains in December 2022 after corrosion. Its replacement, 2.07 km long with a 72-metre vertical lift span, opened on 6 April 2025 and is India's first vertical-lift sea bridge. The 1988 road bridge runs alongside both.
Gulf of Mannar Marine National Parkवन्यजीवRamanathapuram
Twenty-one low coral islands strung between Mandapam and Tuticorin, declared in 1980 as India's first marine national park and later the core of a biosphere reserve. Coral reef, seagrass meadow, dugong, sea turtle and the chank and pearl banks that made this coast's name.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March.
Adam's Bridge (Rama Setu)प्रकृतिRamanathapuram
A forty-eight-kilometre chain of shoals, sandbars and reef running from Dhanushkodi towards Mannar, walkable in stretches at low tide and named in the Ramayana as the causeway. Geologically a series of emergent sandbanks on a shallow ridge; culturally the reason the Ramnad rulers were called guardians of the causeway.
KanadukathanविरासतSivaganga
The mansion village — a grid of streets of Nagarathar courtyard houses, several open as heritage hotels and several standing empty behind locked teak doors. It is the place to understand the type: a long axial sequence of courtyards, the front one for business, the deeper ones progressively more private.
सबसे अच्छा समय: December–February.
AthangudiविरासतSivaganga
A village of tile workshops and one very large mansion. The tile units are open to visitors and the process — glass plate, bronze die, coloured slurry, a week of curing — takes about ten minutes to watch and explains the floor of every mansion in the district.
KaraikudiशहरीSivaganga
The commercial centre of Chettinad, with an antiques quarter along Muneeswaran Koil Street selling architectural salvage — pillars, doors, brass, glass — much of it out of mansions that no longer exist.
Pillaiyarpattiतीर्थSivaganga
A rock-cut Ganesha carved into a low outcrop, with early Tamil inscriptions on the cave wall that place the excavation in the first several centuries CE. One of the nine Nagarathar clan temples, and the busiest of them at Vinayaka Chaturthi.
SittanavasalविरासतPudukkottai
A Jain rock-cut temple, the Arivar Koil, with mural paintings on its ceiling and pillars — a lotus tank with elephants, fish and gatherers, and portrait figures identified with the Pandya king Srimara Srivallabha. The earliest layer is seventh century with ninth-century work over it, and the paintings are routinely ranked with Ajanta and Bagh. Above the temple are the Eladipattam rock beds, polished stone platforms cut for Jain ascetics, with Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions beside them. The patronage is Pandya; the site is here.
Thirumayam FortविरासतPudukkottai
A circular fort built in 1687 by Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, later the seat from which the Tondaiman rulers of Pudukkottai held their country. Rock-cut Shiva and Vishnu shrines are cut into the hill inside the walls.
Ramalinga Vilasam, RamanathapuramविरासतRamanathapuram
The Sethupathi palace, whose durbar hall carries seventeenth-century wall paintings of court scenes, processions and the rulers themselves. It is the best surviving record of what the Ramnad court actually looked like.
KilakaraiविरासतRamanathapuram
An old Tamil Muslim trading port. Its Palaiya Jumma Palli is built in the local temple idiom — granite piers, a flat corbelled roof, no dome and no minaret — with the mihrab aligned to Mecca. The community dates the foundation to the seventh century; the visible fabric is considerably later, and the claim is best reported as the community's own.
KayalpattinamविरासतThoothukudi
Further south along the same coast and strictly beyond this region's edge, but part of the same trading world — a Tamil Muslim town of old mosques, Arwi printing and a chank fishery, and the port Ibn Battuta and the Portuguese both knew as Kayal.
Erwadiतीर्थRamanathapuram
The dargah of Ibrahim Shaheed, one of the largest Muslim pilgrimage centres in the Tamil country, drawing Hindu as well as Muslim visitors to its annual kandoori.
Devipattinamतीर्थRamanathapuram
A shallow-shore bathing place where nine stones set in the water are identified with the nine planets and worshipped standing in the sea. Aadi Amavasai brings very large crowds.
Uthirakosamangaiतीर्थRamanathapuram
An old Shiva temple in a village south of Ramanathapuram, whose Nataraja is said to be carved from a single block of emerald and is uncovered only once a year at Arudra Darshan.
Kalaiyar KovilविरासतSivaganga

A hilltop Murugan temple above Karaikudi, with a rock-cut cave shrine and a long flight of steps.
ManamaduraiशहरीSivaganga
