Theyyam – Bhuta Kola Corridor

KeralaKarnataka

One ritual system in two vocabularies: a hereditary performer from a community of low ritual rank, a shrine owned by a landholding lineage, a sung epic that narrates the deity's life while the costume goes on, a mirror handed over at the moment of transformation, possession marked by a visible tremor, and then a god who hears complaints and delivers judgements binding on people who outrank the performer in every other setting. Both keep a December-to-May calendar, and both deify the unjustly killed.

Malabar's shrine is a kavu, the song is a thottam pattu in Malayalam, the face is worked in mineral pigment in a pattern named for the kolam, and the headdress rises in front of the performer. Tulu Nadu's is a daivasthana attached to a matrilineal guttu, the song is a paddana in Tulu, the face is turmeric and lime, and the frame rises behind. The deities differ: Malabar deifies its own dead, Tulu Nadu adds a boar spirit and a pair of Billava twins.

Arabi-Malayalam and the Arabian Sea

KeralaKarnatakaLakshadweepOMAE

A trading community's entire cultural apparatus, carried by sea rather than overland — a script for writing the local language in Arabic letters, a song repertoire organised by named tunes, a kitchen built on fennel, ghee and short aromatic rice, and a shipbuilding trade whose customers were on the other side of the water. The Beary community of the coast to the north speaks a related register and shares the wedding song forms.

On the Malabar coast the community wrote its own literature in Arabi-Malayalam and produced a poet canon; the Beary variant north of the Chandragiri kept the song forms and the kitchen but not the script. In the Gulf the direction reversed in the twentieth century, and the traffic became labour and remittance.

Gulf Remittance Corridor

KeralaAEOMQASAKW

Money, and everything money rebuilt. Emigration from this region to the Gulf from the 1970s reshaped the house — the concrete two-storey with a portico is a remittance building type — and reshaped the street, with mandi and al-faham now sold in towns that had never heard of either. Beypore's shipwrights build for the same buyers their great-grandfathers did, and Karipur's busiest routes are all westward.

The money came back to a coast that already had an old relationship with the same ports, so the Gulf connection here reads as a resumption rather than as new migration — which is not how it reads from anywhere else in India.

Thamarassery–Nilgiri Plateau Corridor

KeralaKarnatakaTamil Nadu

The pass, the plantation crops that came up it, and a continuous forest. Wayanad's sanctuaries run without a break into Bandipur and Nagarhole in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu, one elephant population moves across all four, and the Paniya, Kurumba and Kattunayakan communities are found on both sides of every line on the map.

The same forest is managed as a wildlife sanctuary on the Kerala side and as tiger reserves on the other two, under different tenure and different rules on Adivasi rights — so a family's entitlements can change by crossing a river.

Kalari and Varma Corridor

KeralaTamil Nadu

Pressure-point knowledge and the healing practice attached to it, taught alongside fighting in the same building by the same teacher. The northern kalari of Malabar, the southern kalari of the Travancore country and the adimurai and varma traditions of the Tamil country south of the Ghats are one body of knowledge described in two languages.

The northern style opens with months of meithari body sequences and works up to steel; the southern style is weighted towards the empty hand and the varma points and is closer to the Tamil adimurai. Both keep the massage and bone-setting practice, and in both it now earns more than the fighting does.

Basel Mission Print Corridor

KeralaKarnataka

One nineteenth-century mission working two ports: at Thalassery it produced the first Malayalam newspaper in 1847 and Gundert's Malayalam–English dictionary in 1872; at Mangaluru it produced a press, Kittel's Kannada–English dictionary of 1894, a tile industry and an industrialised handloom that Kannur's furnishing trade grew out of.

Malabar got a literature and a printing culture out of it; the coast to the north got an industry. Kannur's handloom export trade and Mangaluru's tile kilns both descend from the same workshops.
