Magadh · Middle & Lower Gangetic Plain

Buddhist Circuit

BiharUttar PradeshNepal

The eight great pilgrimage sites — Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Rajgir, Vaishali, Sravasti, Sankisa and Lumbini — joined by a single pilgrimage route walked and flown by pilgrims from across Buddhist Asia, with national monasteries clustered at each end.

Nepal developed Lumbini as a planned international precinct; India's sites are managed as archaeology with monasteries built around the perimeter. Bodh Gaya's temple management has its own long-running dispute over Buddhist and Hindu control.

Jain Tirtha Corridor

BiharJharkhand

Pawapuri, Rajgir, Kundalpur and Sammed Shikharji on Parasnath hill in Jharkhand — the cluster where twenty of the twenty-four tirthankaras are held to have attained liberation, walked as a single pilgrimage by Jains from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka.

Bihar's sites are temple complexes on the plain; Parasnath is a 27-km barefoot hill circuit, and its protection from tourism development has become a national Jain campaign.

Pind Daan Catchment

BiharUttar PradeshWest BengalRajasthanGujaratMaharashtraTamil Nadu

The obligation to perform ancestor rites at Gaya, which draws families from every region of India and from the diaspora, and the Gayawal priestly system that organises them by place of origin.

Regional rites differ in offering, mantra and calendar, and the local priest adjusts to the pilgrim's tradition — one of very few Indian ritual centres that routinely performs a dozen regional liturgies side by side.

Sattu and Litti Belt

BiharUttar PradeshJharkhandWest Bengal

Sand-roasted gram, sattu as a drink and a stuffing, ember-baked litti and raw-oil chokha — a portable foodway that moved with Bihari labour to Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and the Gulf, and now has restaurants in all of them.

Bhojpur claims the litti as loudly as Magadh does and eats it with mutton more often; Bengal absorbed sattu as a summer drink without the litti at all.

Ahar-Pyne Water Belt

BiharJharkhand

The contour-channel and embanked-catchment irrigation system of south Bihar and the plateau edge, together with the customary labour arrangements that maintained it.

On the plateau the same principle produces the smaller bandh and dobha tanks; in south Bihar the pynes run for tens of kilometres and cross multiple villages, which is why their decay was a governance failure rather than an engineering one.

Tibetan Winter Corridor

BiharHimachal PradeshUttarakhandSikkim

The seasonal movement of Tibetan monastic communities, teachers and traders from Dharamshala, Bylakuppe and the Himalayan settlements to Bodh Gaya each winter for teachings, and the market and hospitality economy built around it.

Bodh Gaya is a pilgrimage destination for a diaspora whose institutions are elsewhere; the town's winter economy is Tibetan and its permanent population is Magahi-speaking, and the two overlap for three months a year.
