Pachra and goddess songs

Invocatory songs sung at village goddess shrines, often accompanied by possession, with a lead singer and a drum ensemble.

Sohar and vivah geet

Birth and wedding songs sung by women in Magahi, with a full gaari repertoire of ritual abuse at feasts.

Shrine singing at Bihar Sharif, Maner and Phulwari Sharif, at khanqahs whose Firdausi and Suhrawardi lineages go back to the thirteenth century.

Buddhist chant at Bodh Gaya

Pali, Tibetan, Sinhala, Thai, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese liturgies performed simultaneously around one tree — the most linguistically dense religious soundscape in India.

Ramlila and Krishnalila

Staged in every town through Ashwin, with Magahi dialogue and a local song repertoire.

Nautanki and swang

Touring sung folk-opera, in the same tradition as the Uttar Pradesh companies, performed at fairs.

शिल्प

Patna Kalam painting जीआई योग्य Patna

A school formed when Mughal-trained painters moved east in the eighteenth century and began painting ordinary people — bazaar sellers, artisans, festivals — for East India Company patrons. It is India's first substantially secular school of miniature painting, and it died out by around 1920.

सामग्री: Paper, ivory and mica; watercolour. तकनीक: Figures painted directly in brush without preliminary outline, on a blank ground, with no background detail — the technique known as kajli seahi.

Patharkatti stone carving जीआई योग्य Gaya (Patharkatti)

A carving village at the foot of the Barabar hills, working the same stone in the same way that the Mauryan quarry-workers did — the connection is claimed locally and is at least plausible geologically.

सामग्री: Black nilamani stone from the local hills. तकनीक: Hand carving and polishing of images, lamps, mortars and vessels.

Silao khaja जीआई पंजीकृत Nalanda (Silao)

A single village's sweet, protected by a geographical indication and sold from a hundred shops in one bazaar.

सामग्री: Wheat flour, ghee, sugar. तकनीक: Repeated lamination of dough with ghee, deep frying and syrup steeping.

Tilkut making जीआई योग्य Gaya

A seasonal industry that employs whole lanes of Gaya from November to February and shuts down completely in the heat.

सामग्री: Sesame and jaggery or sugar. तकनीक: Hand pounding with wooden mallets in teams, on a stone block, until the mix flakes.

Magahi paan cultivation जीआई पंजीकृत Nawada, Nalanda, Gaya, Aurangabad

The Magahi betel leaf is soft, pale and comparatively unpungent, and is regarded as the finest paan leaf in India. It holds a geographical indication and is grown by a small number of specialist cultivator families.

सामग्री: Piper betle, Magahi variety. तकनीक: Grown in a bareja — a shaded, humid enclosure of bamboo and thatch — tended daily, with leaves picked and cured to soften the flavour.

Stone Buddha carving at Bodh Gaya Gaya

A pilgrim-market carving trade supplying images to the monasteries of a dozen countries.

सामग्री: Black stone and sandstone. तकनीक: Hand carving to iconographic prescription for monastic and pilgrim buyers.
