नृत्य
Lavaलोक
Minicoy's signature dance and the clearest evidence of its separateness. Rows of men in a bright wrapped costume and headgear move in unison to drums and a sung refrain in Dhivehi, the formation opening and closing as the tempo rises. Each village fields its own troupe, which is what makes the dance a village institution rather than a stage item.
कौन करता है: Men of Minicoy, by village. मौका: Eid, weddings, public receptions and inter-village occasions
Kolkaliलोक
A circling stick dance in which pairs strike short wooden batons in time to a sung line, the circle contracting and expanding. It is the same form found across the Malabar coast, and its presence here maps the islands' Malayali half exactly.
कौन करता है: Men, on the northern and central islands. मौका: Weddings and festivals
Parichakaliयुद्धकला
A mock combat with sword and small shield — paricha — performed in a ring to drumming, descended from the martial exercise of the Malabar coast and now kept alive as performance.
कौन करता है: Men. मौका: Festivals
Duffmuttuलोक
Beaten on the duff, a shallow single-headed frame drum, with a sung Arabic-Malayalam text in praise of the Prophet or of a local saint. The body moves from the waist; the drum carries the form.
कौन करता है: Men, seated or standing in a line. मौका: Weddings, Milad-un-Nabi, saints' commemorations
Thaara, Bandiya, Dandi and Fuliलोक
The rest of the Minicoy repertoire, all of it shared with the Maldives. Bandiya is danced by women with metal water pots; Thaara is a seated drum-and-chorus form of Arab derivation.
कौन करता है: Minicoy troupes, some by women. मौका: Weddings and village celebration
संगीत
Oppana
A wedding song led by one singer with a chorus of women clapping in response, sung around the bride. Shared with the Mappila tradition of the Malabar coast, where the same form carries the same function.
Dhivehi song at Minicoy
Sung in Dhivehi to frame drums, and the main context in which the language is still performed in public. Because Dhivehi is not a medium of schooling at Minicoy, song has become one of the principal ways the language is transmitted intact to children.
Mappila-derived devotional song
Arabic-Malayalam texts sung at Milad-un-Nabi and at commemorations, in the same repertoire as the Malabar coast — the surest sign that the northern islands' religious culture arrived from Kerala and not from Arabia directly.
रंगमंच
No documented theatre tradition
The islands have dance, drum and song, but no recorded masked, narrative or dramatic form. Saying so is more useful than filling the space.
शिल्प
Coir spinning and coir products जीआई योग्य Kavaratti, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Amini and the Amindivi islands
The islands' one manufactured export, run through administration-owned factories set up to give the coconut economy a second product beyond copra.
सामग्री: Coconut husk fibre. तकनीक: Husks are steeped in lagoon shallows for several months until the pith rots away, then beaten out, cleaned and spun into yarn; the yarn is woven into matting, rope and mats. Retting in salt water rather than backwater is the local variation, and it produces a stiffer, paler fibre.
Masmin processing जीआई योग्य All fishing islands, historically strongest at Minicoy and Agatti
Treated locally as a craft rather than a factory process — the smoke, the cut of the loin and the drying time are household knowledge, and the product is graded by hardness and colour.
सामग्री: Skipjack tuna, coconut husk, sea salt. तकनीक: Brine boiling, husk-fire smoking and sun-drying of tuna loins on coral-rubble floors.
Lacquered walking sticks and turned wood जीआई योग्य Kalpeni and Kavaratti
A small, genuinely local craft producing walking sticks, paperweights, boxes and toys. The wood is imported, since nothing but coconut grows on the islands, which makes this a craft defined by its technique rather than by its material.
सामग्री: Imported wood, natural and synthetic lacquer. तकनीक: The stick is turned on a hand or treadle lathe and lacquer is applied while it spins, the friction melting the stick of colour onto the wood in bands, then burnished.
Coconut shell craft जीआई योग्य Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Minicoy
The by-product craft of the copra economy — the shell that is left after the kernel is taken for oil.
सामग्री: Coconut shell, coir, shell inlay. तकनीक: Cutting, filing and polishing the hard endocarp into ladles, cups, lamps and ornament.
Boat building जीआई योग्य All inhabited islands, most distinctively Minicoy
Boats are the one large object the islands make. The odam, the tuna pole-and-line boat and Minicoy's jahadhoni are separate traditions, and the jahadhoni exists for racing and for ceremony rather than for work.
सामग्री: Imported hardwood, coir lashing historically. तकनीक: Shell-first hull construction worked by eye without drawn plans, the shape carried in the builder's memory and in a set of moulds. Minicoy's jahadhoni racing boats are built long, narrow and brightly painted.
Tortoise-shell work Historically Minicoy and Kavaratti
A documented historical craft that is now illegal — the hawksbill is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act — and is recorded here as history, not as something to buy.
सामग्री: Hawksbill turtle shell. तकनीक: Heating, flattening and polishing of shell plates into boxes, combs and lamp panels.
